Few people had ever heard of Moby a few years ago, and then one at a time, he licensed each of his songs to different advertising campaigns around the world.
Chevy's rental of that particular song is tacky since they advertise a truck built in Mexico (if I recall correctly) while singing about our country.
Some songs work, some don't. When Coke started advertising their Coke Zero product, they licensed "I Want to Break Free" by Queen, a song from 1984. It worked very well 20 years later for their product. I don't think the Mellencamp song works for the Chevy ads because of the product they are showing while it plays.
