Obama: Reagan's central insight (of Democratic liberal policy) contained a "good deal of truth."
Edited on Thu Jan-17-08 07:23 PM by jackson_dem
Look it up yourself.

Pages 156-157

"The conservative revolution Reagan helped usher in gained traction because Reagan's central insight--that the liberal welfare state had grown complacent and overly bureaucratic, with Democratic policy makers more obsessed with slicing the economic pie than with growing he pie--contained a good deal of truth."

He makes the argument the DLC made about the size, role of government. When people talk of expanding the pie rather than slicing it they are using smokescreens for talking about cutting back on social programs.

1. Neo liberalism that gained popularity since the 80s was the worst thing that ‘ve ever happened. .
Look at how many people have to struggle to survive now? The fact is, there are plenty of way to be fiscally conservative without cutting social programs. Even though I was 24, but i believe The New Deal was good, the social programs were good, i love reading about the 60s and the 70s, people actually gave a damn.

2. Obama thinks Reagan corrected some of the "problems" of the 60's and 70's
And he wrote this in 2006, not 1986.

3. reagan doubled the national debt
in 1979 Jimmy Carter put out his last budget, with a $58 billion deficit. The merdia went nuts- Carter was spending us into poorhouse etc (surely people can remember this, it led the network news for days!) when reagan's first budget came out, it was $200 billion deficit, but the news never made the front page...in 1980, when Carter was finished, the US national debt was $1 trillion; 8 years later, it was $2.6 trillion.
If obama doesn't realize that regan was a front man for certain special interests, then he's either a liar or he's very naive
btw, how many people heard of Obama a year ago?

7. Is Obama naive or just a liar?
Either is dangerous. I prefer to think naive.

If so, he is not ready for prime time. He needs more experience before he seeks the presidency.

16. KAL 007
How they did it (make the KAL 007 shootdown incident disappear from memory) is astonishing, but obama has to consider this: on Sept 30/1983, Korean passenger jet strayed for HOURS off course into the most dangerous heavily guarded airspace on earth, going over 300 miles into Soviet nogo area (KAL 007 was actually 2nd korean jet to do this; the first was hit by missile but managed to land- that was when Carter was president) w/out Japan/Alaska, or even the Russians, controllers noticing! A Soviet jet shot KAL 007 down when it 'refused to respond' even to gunshots 'across bow'(KAL 007 was almost certainly on remote control at time it blew up. even a suicidal maniac at the controls couldn't stop passengers from seeing soviet jets out windows, which btw were 'blacked out' according to Russians)...300 people died. Most importantly, reagan was able to run up the military budget, the beginning of the end of civilization was on Sept 1st 1983 when the reagan accused the Russians of mass murder, and the Russian seemed to play along, evil empire and all that...military spending now consumes most of every tax dollar, and taxes are mostly burden to middle class (the US middle class was easily largest in history at time)...within a few years, talk radio went from liberal genius like Alan Berg to rush limbah-humbug (Alan was murdered by 'the order' a rightwing brinks truck robbery gang, in 1984)...the eerie comparisons to 911 probably the main reason KAL 007 is not mentioned (the details just didn't make sense- why didn't the russians simply warn KAL 007 off, for example)... it was only plane disaster involving US citizens, (including congresman ronald madonald- jesse helms had a seat but missed it!) that was never investigated by NTSB, not to this day...seymour hersh wrote a book couple months after saying the US had spy planes operating nearby at time etc, which endangered the civilian airliner, but it's possible no Russians were involved at all and KAL 007 was blown up by remote control, as it was nearly out of USSR airspace..it's black boxes were recovered from international waters, and nothing ever said about it...but it set USA up for bush, 911 and lots more

11. I remember that all very, very well.
Like I'm sure that you remember David Stockman and the envelope, the Laffer curve and the vegetable known as ketchup.

I really do not know where Obama came from, but I don't like where it looks like he's going.

A poster a few days ago wrote that Obama's party at the 2004 convention was easily the fanciest, including an open bar--the only one that poster saw in 2004.

You have to wonder where that money came from.

12. We should verify if that is true
If it is that is disturbing. A state senator was holding a lavish party with an open bar and it was more fancy than the other parties being held by long established big names? Where did the money come from.

And asked the same question. I wish he or she would repost.

I'm not a contributor (been economically hosed by Shrub), and the post was more than 48 hrs. ago.

I'm kicking myself now, though.

10. Reagan and Walmart: Two evil powers which brought down labor and wages
Reagan fired the Air Traffic Controllers for going on strike. Since then the labor unions have been losing membership and power. With this, wages and benefits for union and non-union members have gone down.

Walmart has taken over our nation, becoming the largest grocer, employer, department store... along with that power they have pressured suppliers to move over seas... trained employees how to apply for government health care plans... kept wages down... and kept women down... Any Democrat who shops at Walmart should do their homework!

Any Democrat who panders to the Reaganites for a vote is pimping themselves...

GOP CANDIDATES ALL SUPPORT CLONING … OF THEMSELVES INTO RONALD REAGAN!

I concur 100% and have been steadfast in maintaining the pressure on Obamites.

I know how short manipulated memories can be and glassy-eyed is a nice way of calling Obamites, CULTISTS.

They actually admit, without recognition of what they are saying and it's gravity, that to get votes and win, what Obama did is fine.

Sorry, but there is a word for selling your soul and what it isn't is INTEGRITY.

Winning without integrity, at any cost, is a pyrrhic victory at best.

Shame on the glassy-eyed!
