It's time to stop deifying our candidates! |
|
Whether you want to admit it or not, each of the top three candidates has some serious flaws. Frankly, I'm quite disappointed at who we have to choose from. I was really hoping we could do better. We have some very serious problems that need to be dealt with and not politicized, and I'm not sure that, even with the best man for the job (Al Gore) we can turn this country around anytime soon. But the best man is not available, and with a great deal of help from the media, these three are the ones we have to choose from. Sure, when put up against who the repubs are running, they look much better. But it's like an overweight person looking into a carnival mirror. It distorts reality.
I know that when we choose to back a certain candidate we have a personal stake in the matter, and we tend to get defensive, when people are less than kind to them. But quit being so defensive and acting like your candidate can do no wrong. They all have things to be ashamed of. They all have displayed gross lapses in judgement, and if we manage to put a dem in the White House, we'll be lucky, at best if they don't fuck things up too awful much. Frankly, after seven years of Bush dismantling our country, I would consider that a success.

1. On the converse, let's stop demonizing as well |
|
They all have pros and cons.

3. There is a huge difference between holding them up to the light of |
|
accountability for their actions, and your basic mudslinging. If they do things that I don't like, I will always speak out. And, excuse me if I feel that none of the three are worthy of holding the most responsible office in the land. My standards for the oval office are still high.

5. I'm not saying that you should turn a blind eye |
|
but that we should put things in perspective. Let me highlight what I think is the difference between demonize and criticize. Being critical is fine, no one deserves a free pass just because they're a democrat, but we should save demonizing for the Republicans.

6. Yep. Agreed. And the fun thing is, demonizing repubs |
|
would be like shooting fish in a barrel..

7. It's nice to agree with a DUer these days |
|
Seems like I've been getting into digital fisticuffs with people in the last week. My mental energy used to go to fighting republicans and now it's been misdirected, which is why I responded to your post.

2. It seems to be one of the defining characteristics of DU |

Every Dem is either a messiah or a devil on DU - and which one they are can flip overnight.

8. Always keep in mind that they are, first and foremost, politicians. |
|
They're all vying for power. A questionable pursuit at best.
They all ask (or, demand) that we "trust" them. Given that they are all politicians, a questionable request at best.

And lump all the other candidates together because they aren't him. Brilliant. The fact is, Edwards and Obama are not the same as the Clintons and Al Gore would be the first to tell you that.

11. I haven't deified Al Gore. I simply believe he was the best |
|
qualified individual for the job. I am certainly not alone in that assessment. He is not available.
