Regarding Joseph Lieberman
Former democrat Joseph Lieberman is on CNN with republican candidate John McCain. I have long thought that there is a possibility that McCain will consider Lieberman as a VP choice if he is the republican nominee, as Neoliberal Joe is more acceptable to many republican elders than McCain.

While the democratis primary has caused some heated debate and unfortunate divisions on DU, we should all be united in our rejection of what the Lieberman "democrats" stand for. Thus, I quote from the democratic historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.'s journal, an accurate description of Joe:

"August 28, 2000: Joe Lieberman, though he refrained in his acceptance speech from attributing his nomination to the personal intervention of the Almighty, cannot keep his wretched sanctimony out of the campaign. On 27 August, he can a speech in Detroit declaring that belief in God is the basis of morality and of the American republic. One wonders why the Founding Fathers did not bother to mention God in the Constitution. 'As a people,' Holy Joe opined, 'we need to reaffirm our faith and renew the declaration of our nation and ourselves to God and God's purpose.' Lincoln had it better when he reminded the nation in his second inaugural, 'The Almighty has his own purposes.' The Lieberman rule would brand all agnostics and atheists as incapable of morality and of American citizenship."

1. Thanks for reminding us
Why Lieberman is as bad as any Republican when it comes to mixing personal belief & government. This man must be shunned by Democrats.

6. He has endorsed
McCain, and is pushing the Cheney policies in the Middle East. I think he will do everything he can to use the conservative democrats (re: neoliberals) to cause problems for our party. There are times I think that we see this type of influence on the political scene already.

I agree 100% that we need to shun him and his ilk in the 2008 election.

8. My feelings of revulsion toward this Benedict Arnold warmonger are very strong
The sooner the Dems kick this traitor out of the Democratic caucus for good, the better. We need more democratic senators ASAP.

12. Exactly right.
I'm a progressive democrat, who is always interested in working with liberals and moderates. I understand that there are times when it is important to work with conservative democrats and liberal republicans -- for example, on obvious examples such as when there has been a flood.

But I also recognize that there are times when we would be foolish to not recognize that people like the neoliberals and neoconservatives are more dangerous than a flood.

7. Very important point.
Though I am not satisfied with the performance of the democratic Congress, I recognize that it is extremely important that we work to increase our majority in the House and Senate.

Thank you for reminding us of this!

4. I think it is likely. After all, the Dems are likely to have a "first" on their ticket.
The GOP has to counter with one of their own.

America has already gotten used to the idea of VICE PRESIDENT LIEBERMAN, thanks to Al Gore.

And that will move the Jewish vote, which isn't unsubstantial in key states, to the GOP, along with the EVANGELICALS, who will be riding the Rapture Train.

What you are seeing here is a "tryout." I will bet the campaign is polling like mad on an "attitudinal check" about how America feels about the pair.

I don't like either one of them, but I watched the whole event on CSPAN, and they were substantive, engaging, and they have a BIG crowd.

They could be very problematic. Anyone who says otherwise is whistling past the graveyard.

10. I agree.
I do think that a significant portion of the Jewish democrats disagree with the direction that Senator Lieberman has moved in. I admit that I am basing this largely upon friends who are liberal democrats, who are strong advocates of a close US-Israeli relationship, and who know that Lieberman's positions are too aggressive and Cheney-ish.

I think that he appeals to more conservative Christian democrats who do not have healthy boundries in regard to their religious agenda, and who will confuse the McCain-Lieberman position with some type of ordained strength.

Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 05:22 PM by Tatiana
He's Zell Miller, only without the dementia. As a party, we should wash our hands of him PERMANENTLY. I don't care if it means sharing power in the Senate w/ Republicans. We haven't done anything with our chairmanships anyway. Endorsing McCain is the final straw. This is not simply a matter of a difference in national security policy. He has repudiated core values regarding the separation of church and state as well as civil liberties.

Let him ride the Insane McCain bus right off a cliff.

Oh, thank you! The Zell Miller line made me laugh out loud!

I think that Lieberman has attempted to hold democratic policy hostage, and to blackmail our congressional leaders.

17. I hope McCain chooses Lieberman as his VP.
This will further alienate Republicans who already can't stand Saint McCain. Hopefully, they will just decide to stay home like in '96.

about the link between these two)
Personaly, I am dreaming of Joe poisoning McCain's ticket just as he did Gore's (complete with backstabbing). it would be poetic justice.
I almost didn't vote for Gore because precisely those events you mentioned.
I was barely in politics then - but I knew that Bush's Jesus Day scared me - and now came Joementum on the other side with the sanctimony. I almost didn't vote then.
Glad he eventually STFU - or else I would have never become , well, robbedvoter.

26. Every time I read stuff like this, it makes me happy about one thing....
I overcame my innate laziness enough to get on a train to Connecticut and leaflet for Lamont.

We all have other demands on our time, but try to get out there and work for good candidates in 2008. It makes the victories more fun and the losses more bearable.
