Thousands Gather at American for Glimpse of Obama

Thousands of Washington area residents descended on American University this morning for a glimpse of Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama, who was scheduled to appear at a campus rally to accept the endorsement of fellow U.S. senator and senior statesman Edward M. Kennedy (Mass.).

City dwellers and suburbanites, young and old, mixed with crowds of college students -- some of whom started gathering at Bender Arena before dawn. The fast-growing line snaked out the campus's Massachusetts Avenue entrance and wound for blocks through the normally quiet streets of Washington's affluent Spring Valley neighborhood -- down University Avenue, past Rodman, and onto Quebec Street NW.

By 11:35 a.m., with the rally still an hour away, the 5,000-seat arena was full, and hundreds of those who were still waiting were being directed to an overflow space.

Inside the arena, the mood was excited and celebratory, as the Obama faithful buzzed about yesterday's endorsement from Caroline Kennedy, and the anointing by her uncle that would come in just a short while. Both Kennedys were expected to appear with Obama, along with the elder Kennedy's son, Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy of Rhode Island.
