Edwards was preparing to buy $6 million in Super Tuesday ads
sounds like someone who was about to get a LOT of media coverage, and favorable coverage at that.
No doubt the repsonse would have been very positive as his message resonates better with independent voters than any other candidates.

Someone was very threatened and didn't want that to happen. Who put the hammer down?

1. Or he wanted to leave his options open, and didn't want to telegraph a withdrawal.

2. You Wonder How Far Even That Amount Of Money Can Go?
Hillary spent $33 million just on her NY re-election race...

9. His donations were doubling in the last month
With a $6 million ad campaign he would have done more than pick up voters, he would have picked up donors, too.

His campaign was growing in strength, donations and popularity. He didn't abandon it so quickly because he was succeeding.

26. Me too
I contributed several times. He's the only candidate who ever motivated me enough to contribute cash.

31. Seriously, save it for yourself
Times are going to get harder in the near future and there isn't much hope for improvement, even if a Dem wins the WH.

Save your money, put it in savings instead of donating to the party or Dem candidates. They don't need it now, they are getting tons of corporate money. Because of that corporate money, the economy isn't going to get fixed, nor is health care or energy prices. Save your donations, you're going to need them.

32. Very good point, Ozark Dem
I don't plan on contributing again since I don't have a strong belief in anyone else this time around, and I think this was the last dance. You are very correct about what lies ahead and I take your advice seriously as should others. Thank you.

...suddenly having gotten worse...

I know what you mean though...the timing just seems so strange...what would he have had to lose by seeing it though ST and THEN deciding....that would have made so much more sense...and, I think, been more understandable/palatable to his faithful followers...

36. Even more strange. He visited several states yesterday
including St. Paul, MN, where he got a warm welcome even at a bone chilling weather. He promised he would stay in the race, he got an extensive cover in the local media - TV and print - only to admit, in New Orleans, that he already knew he was going to suspend his campaign.

So why bother at all? There are so many hopeful people who are now confused and wonder about politics.

29. Good point
I wonder if they "Kucinich'd" him out of the debate?

I doubt it is Elizabeth's health. She was as invested in this campaign as John, and would have the grace and courage to keep going. I really don't think that's it.

Eh - no sense watching a Hill-o-Bama debate. That frees up my evening.

5. I've been wondering the same thing
He didn't seem like himself today. In today's political climate, think of the chances that he was threatened if he continued. He wouldn't back down for himself, but not so sure if his family was threatened.

I dunno. Don't care about politics anymore now that Edwards is out. I've spent too much of my life trying to change things already. Despite JRE asking us not to turn away, I don't know what else to do right now. So I'm on the lookout for something fun to do with all that extra time I'll have in the few remaining years this country/world has.

12. I don't think Edwards is the type to get out just because of pressure
he made his own mind up based on where he saw the campaign going and due to the lack of attention the corporate media was giving him.

16. His campaign was doing fine
we may never know the real reason, but we do know that we voters have no control over the primary or the election. Our party's control is minimal at best. Same thing will happen if a Dem is elected to the WH. They won't respond to us, even if we voted for them.

25. I truly believe it came down to a personal decision between John & Elizabeth, now
whether it was her health or some other personal issue I don't know. I just don't see Edwards backing away from the election based on threats or fear that's just not the kind of guy he is.

37. Well, I heard/read somewhere that last night John was visited
by the CEOs of GE, ExxonMobil, Halliburton and Google, accompanied by Queen Elizabeth, G.H.W. Bush (representing Skull and Bones), a vampire, a little green man, and of course Oprah. They "suggested" he pull out today. It's hard to say no to those folks.
