Victory is not out of reach. Get back into the race as a champion for Impeachment!!Impeach to Win in Diaries
1/30/2008 at 1:36 PM ESTThe tragic failure of leadership on impeachment to date presents John Edwards with an incredible opportunity to renew and revitalize his campaign by following the example set by George McGovern, who has "belatedly and painfully concluded that the only honorable course for me is to urge the impeachment of the president and the vice president."
There is nothing to stop him from getting back into the race. The realization that impeachment is a moral imperative would compel a re-evaluation of his decision to withdraw. Getting back into the race would put him in a unique position to become a truly effective champion for impeachment. (And bucking the impeachophobic establishment is certainly easier if they've already withdrawn their support.)
To remain out of the race after coming out for impeachment would deny his fellow Americans the opportunity to use our votes to demand action and declare their commitment to preserving the People's Government and the Constitution.
Past opposition to impeachment is not a barrier. Americans embrace the "sinner" who sees the light. (And the "reformed" often garner more attention and respect than those who take the right course from the start.)
Electing a Democratic President can't "fix things." There is no "restoring" of that which should never be lost. When a criminal steals, we don't "restore" the law against theft. We enforce it. We charged Congress with duty "police" officials in the executive and judiciary. Impeachment is the means to stop violations by removing the violators from power. Failure to challenge bushchenyism now allows it to flourish. Even if Democrats would otherwise win the next election, it is ONLY by impeachment that the scope of damage can be exposed. Without it, they are left to regroup and reemerge.
There is No Downside. The truth is that, contrary to the conventional "wisdom" of the DC establishment, there is no downside to defending the Constitution by demanding impeachment. There is NO "backlash beast" waiting to strike. And the upside potential is enormous. With polls showing 70% of the nation in agreement that this regime has abused the powers of office (and with many of the remaining simply lying to the pollsters), impeachment could well be the only way back to "bipartisan" or "unified" governing.
Only impeachment matches the words with the deeds.By demanding impeachment Edwards would broaden his appeal by demonstrating moral clarity and guts and confirm his place as a principled outsider willing to take on the Washington establishment.
As long as John Edwards holds the position that impeachment can't, won't, or shouldn't happen, he is trapped in this beltway moral contradiction and therefore his message rings false. When he tells the truth and accuses Bush and Cheney in clear and simple terms, and then attempts to justify his opposition to impeachment, he sounds just like any other unprincipled and fear-ridden beltway "strategerist" -- the same corporate/insider pols that his campaign tries to set him up in opposition to.
