Romney Accuses McCain of ‘Nixon Era’ Campaign Tactics
http://youdecide08.foxnews.com/2008/01/31/romney-accuses-mccain-of-nixon-era-campaign-tactics/

Mitt Romney compared rival John McCain with late President Richard Nixon Thursday, accusing McCain of persistently misrepresenting Romney’s position on the Iraq war for political gain in a style “reminiscent of the Nixon era.”

Romney’s sharp criticism spilled over from the GOP debate in California the night before, where he said McCain was resorting to old-style “dirty tricks” by claiming Romney supported a timetable for troop withdrawal.

“I think he took a sharp detour off the straight-talk express by stooping to the attack he did, and then of course by him continuing to say it is a very strange thing. And as I mentioned last night, every independent voice that I’ve seen has pointed out that what he’s done is disingenuous and not honorable,” Romney said in Long Beach, Calif., Thursday.

“Had he a question about this he could have raised it any time between April and now, but to raise it outside a debate and to do it … to people in Florida was something reminiscent of the Nixon era and I don’t think I want to see our party go back to that kind of campaigning. “

1. Ha!
It became painfully apparent last night that Mitt has little grasp of how to debate. He attempted to answer each of McCain's charges with a pile of statistics. This isn;t a corporate board meeting, Willard.

At one point, he asked McCain how he (JC) could possibly know what Mitt had been thinking when he gave an answer. That is a good debate tactic. But he didn't press it; instead, the long and too detailed answers.

Debating a republican should not be that hard for even a plastic fellow like Mitt. The Nixon image is perfect. He needs to make it stick, so that the democratic candidate can make use of it.

4. I noticed that the near dead audience threw Mitt for a loop
He is used to scripted cheers worth about 5 minutes out of a 10 minute stump speech. Last night he laid out some real duds. You could dub in crickets noises and it would be very apt.

He is the emptiest suit ever to make it to the national scene.

6. He really is not
gifted with communication skills, outside of a board room setting. You can see him fighting the urge to raise his voice and say, "Okay, you are fired. Get your stuff out of your desk, and get out of here." But he isn't in a position of control, and at this point, I assume he is as likely to become an NBA All-Star as he is to become talented in the art of debate.

3. And that's a bad thing???
Now if McCain had been accused of Bush Era campaign tactics, I would be more concerned.

:nopity:

5. Wrong tactic, Mittens...
Making McCain look like Nixon will on make him more appealing to Republican voters.
