"indeed, they may still vote for him and his delegates will have to decide who to support in the convention. he will still appear on the ballots as far as i know."

Care, and get out of Iraq? These are issues not candidates. If candidates don't support them the delegates can dismiss them and their bad platform.

At least ones who aren't committed to a candidate. If I vote for a candidate that has dropped out I give a stranger power over my vote. I am supporting Obama And I would like the delegate to vote Obama so I feel i lose power. I mean what if the Delegate votes For Mrs Clinton? (I don't mind her she would make a fine President but I am still angry with her) I would rather put my vote in my desired destination I mean why make a pit stop?
