It's the winter weather. Come late March and early April, things will be much better.

8. During election years, they need to increase the minimum post count |

before trolls new people are allowed to start threads. Substantially.
Alternatively, don't allow people to start threads unless they've been here for, oh, a month or two. Do it by DATE rather than by post count.
It took me a LONG time before I got up the nerve to start a thread. Some of our newer members are MUCH more bold!

9. Because some people like to hurt and humiliate others. Just human nature. |

It's been a relatively small number of people fanning the flames, posting again and again, and the ones who are doing so enjoy it. They craft their posts precisely to make others feel bad -- that's what's getting them off.
Usually these members of our community have their venom pointed at the other side, but during primary season, they've turned the fangs inward, and our community has suffered as a result. The people they antagonize lash out at the other side, too, and eventually you get the nuclear reactor DU is today. All you can do is put on your asbestos underwear, try not to take things too seriously, and hit the ignore button when it starts getting to you.

So, it's easy to get in someone's face and be as nasty as you like when they're not nearby to punch you.
