Clinton was not a great president. |
|
Edited on Sat Feb-09-08 02:22 PM by Drunken Irishman
Anyone who believes he deserves this title is too focused in recent history and ignorant of the past.
Do I think Clinton was a good president? Yeah. He was slightly better than average. But to suggest he was the last great president is absurd. The last great president this country had was probably FDR.
Now if you say Clinton was the last GOOD president we had, I'll readily concede that belief. But he was not a great president. He did not do great things for this country and he did not dramatically shape its foundation like the few great presidents before him.

NAFTA, Don't Ask Don't Tell, Welfare Deform, The Telecomm Act, and the Financial Services Reform Act are straight out of the Richard Nixon playbook.

7. Greatness is measured by the magnitude of the challenges an individual faces. |
|
Clinton faced great challenges and he prevailed. That makes him a great one.
Most popular president leaving office since WW II.

And to make them comparable to the struggles of say what Roosevelt and Lincoln faces diminish those real struggles.

If you put his challenges side-by-side of Roosevelt and Lincoln, hell, even Kennedy, they dwarf anything he faced.

21. Now come on, I never said that. |
|
In fact, if you read my original post, I said he was a good president.
However, I don't think he was a great president. In my mind, there are only a select few presidents who have done enough to receive that honor, Clinton is not one of them. It doesn't mean he was a bad president, or a failure, just not a great.

|
Edited on Sun Feb-10-08 12:21 PM by bulloney
Were we in some type of economic catastrophe that he led us out from?
Were we under attack a la Pearl Harbor and he brought the nation together to retaliate against the right nation (are you listening Bush supporters)?
Please clarify.

If certain twits would look at the whole of the 1950s, they'd see why most thinking people miss that era the most. But they are only interested in wedge issues, nor can they be bothered to think at all so I'll join the crowd and start with empty responses too...
The target audience isn't anyone who has posted since this time timestamp... :)

That would take you to the three clowns I hold responsible for the Great Depression...Harding, Coolidge and Hoover. All Republicans. And each of those three presidents had Republican-controlled Houses and Senates to work with.

almost as good as Nixon, except Clinton did not undermine the constitution. These are the presidents since I have been old enough to vote. But I agree that FDR was the last really great president. LBJ could have been if he had ended the Viet-Nam war.

The Civil Rights Acts, Medicare, Head Start, the other Great Society programs... he managed to cut the poverty rate in half during his presidency. If he only would have stayed out of SE Asia, he would be remembered as a truly great president.

that could have made him great or at least much better than he was.
the sista souljah moments are a good example such as his signing DOMA, welfare reform, lack of health care.
one problem was the Republican congress , but even that is an example of Clinton not bringing the country to his side and get him a democratic congress to pass his agenda.

|
We need to tarnish a great man's legacy now because you have to try and undermine any accomplishments related to the Clintons, merely because you have a candidate running against them? Grow the fuck up and try and find some integrity.
