Just got back from the first Obama Organizational Meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio
Edited on Wed Feb-13-08 09:38 PM by VolcanoJen
After witnessing what I did this evening, there is no doubt in my mind that Obama can take Ohio, and big.

Cincinnatians who signed up on the Obama website were emailed by the campaign early today. The campaign wanted us to know that they had secured a location for their Cincinnati office, and, apologizing for the extra-short notice, wanted to let us know they were having their first official Organizational Meeting tonight, at 6:00 p.m. Since they were still having the heat turned on at the new headquarters, and expected big attendance, the meeting was held at Friendship Baptist Church, about 5 minutes from downtown.

When I started to get close to the church, maybe two miles away, I hit ridiculously heavy traffic. It's an urban area and it's normally congested at rush hour, but this was ridiculous. When I got about five blocks from the church, it was pure gridlock, and I could see that all the side street parking was filling up, so, being late and irritated, I grabbed a spot and decided to trek through the ice and snow. So many people had that idea that we all started walking up the hill, and chatting, and the crowd just got larger. When I made it inside, it was already standing room only with TV crews and all. A very festive atmosphere!

I decided to go up front and lean against a wall, when a very nice young gentleman got out of his folding chair and gave it to me. :-) I looked around at all the people... young and old, fathers and daughters, mothers and sons, black, white, Asian, Latino, gay, straight... and even some rather out-of-place Republican-looking men in suits. ;-) I noticed that the back of the church was now filling up, people were crowding in, and many were practically jammed against the doors. People just kept on coming. The room was overflowing and buzzing and cheerful.

The meeting was called to order and a lovely young woman named Bettina Tsongas (yes, Paul's daughter!) came up to the microphone. She practically had tears in her eyes. She said of all the states she'd been to, this was the most amazing organizational crowd she'd ever seen. The campaign staff all came up to the mic and talked about how overwheliming we were, they sincerely seemed touched.

I won't go into the details of the meeting, but when it was wrapping up, Bettina told us that they had made 700 copies of signup sheets, and they had run out.

In all my years of political activism and volunteerism, I'd never seen anything like it. We weren't coming to a rally, and we weren't coming to vote. We were coming to offer our time and our support. And to do that, just that one simple act of participation, we sat in a traffic jam on a miserable February day, we slid across treacherous ice, and ruined our best work shoes in the grey city snow. And we did this, with less than 24 hour notice, in the most incredible numbers I've ever seen for a primary election. A primary! And in Cincinnati, the Republican bastion of the state! I've never even seen a crowd half its size for the first volunteer meeting for a general election!

Here's hoping the support in Ohio outside our GOP enclave is even greater. What an incredible, and encouraging kickoff to what promises to be the most intense two-and-a-half week Primary battle this state has ever seen.

46. Wes, I finally saw it with my own eyes.
The legendary Obama Ground Game is... For. Real.

Such an impressive staff, such professionalism. They urged and urged us again that Obama's campaign is positive, and that we are to keep it positive in our discussions with others. It was really quite inspiring.

They reminded us that this campaign is not about Barack Obama, it's about participation, democracy, and us.

There is a groundswell. These people know what they are doing. And even they were impressed by us.

I'm orignially from Nap-town, and I met my wife in Bloomington :P The blessed liberal bastion in Indiana! Go B-town!

Anyways I think he will take Indiana fairly handily at least in the primaries. McCain will probably take it in the GE.

Thanks alot for sharing about your Ohio experience. I'm hopeful that the big cities in OH will go Obamas way. Having grown up in Indiana and having spent at least a month a year in Iowa I'm thinking it may well go the same way. Believe it or not the "state culture" is very similar IMO.

On edit: I'm thinking that Ohio may go Obamas way as the people always seemed very similar to me. I could quantify but I don't want to distract anhy more than I have.

... I'm proud to be considered "similar" to Iowans and Hoosiers alike. We are very, very similar.

Ohio's going Blue in November. Since we're the bigger state, will the rest follow the leader? ;-)

6. Fantastic news!!
This is the only part about being at the end of the line that I hate. We have organization in Oregon, but it's more social and back-up for national phone calling than anything. What a terrific thing to be part of. Almost makes me want to hop on a plane and fly out there!!

Thank you!!

18. That's really what it is... it's like, America is starting to wake up.
Both Obama and Clinton are inspiring this wave of participation, enthusiasm, and activism. A new passion for government, after getting a good taste of awful government for eight years, and then to have these two amazing candidates who everyone just seems to believe in.

Watching all the other states go first, it's been so hard to be patient and wait our turn, especially when it looked like Ohio wouldn't matter. But now that this crazy wave of campaigning and media attention have hit my backyard, well...

...it's mindblowing to me. And I'm so encouraged that it just keeps building, and that the American people seem more engaged in this race than any I've experienced in my lifetime.

I feel lucky, don't we all?

Not just for the election, but on a daily basis over the next years of BIG transitions.

Obama can't do it alone, can't even come close -- no one person can no matter what their position. We need a few hundred million people just to get started dealing with the climate crisis and global poverty and...

19. That is remarkable for our Republican little town.
I'm happy that the turnout was strong. That's a good sign that Ohio could go blue this time. I'm Cincinnati born and bred, and haven't had a chance to work for a winning campaign in a good long while ('96 I guess). I'm still for Hillary but that doesn't mean that I wish the Obama folks ill. Unfortunately, the more time I spend in DU, and the more anti-Hillary or "why don't you just accept that you've lost" gloating posts I read, the longer it'll probably take me to join it. However, I'll support whoever gets the nod - I'm on my third candidate so far, so I'm in for the long haul - and I know how important Ohio will be in November.

21. The beauty of it is, this is every bit as much about Hillary.
She's the most formidable candidate in the race. She still is. This thing is just not over.

Hillary is inspiring this new passion for activism America seems to be enjoying as much as Obama is. Without the two of them offering us this incredible "best of both worlds" choice, I just don't think we'd be this engaged and enthusiastic about politics, as a nation.

I feel hopeful about this country, for the first time in many dark years. I wasn't sure I'd ever feel this way again.

I have a feeling I'm not the only one, and that's what's really moving this emotional race.

We have Hillary and Barack to thank for it, but most of all, each other.

23. We didn't have that many people in my Virginia town, but we covered 90% of the city door-to-door....
in a week. You guys will kick butt, i am so happy for all of you. Work as hard as you can for the next 2 weeks, it will be worth it in the end. Last night was so fulfilling I really can not explain it, i was so tired. I opened a poll at 6am, went to work at 8:30, got out of work at 5:00 and held up a sign in traffic for an hour in the freezing rain (the sign was covered in ice) to remind people to vote. Then the returns came in, we were at a bar with some other Obama supporters and we could see the results. Our city went 75% for Obama, our county went 68% for Obama. The hard work payed off.

Oh, and my girlfriend was in the newspaper and on the local radio station. She went to all the polling places and handed out hand-warmers to the Obama people at the polling tables, it was so cold out and raining. Something you might want to look into, you can get a pack of 6 (12 total) for $2 at walmart. It makes a difference for the people who are at the Obama polling tables in the cold.

GOBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

45. I know! It wasn't a rally. It wasn't an event. It was a volunteer meeting!
Barack and Michelle weren't there. No famous politicos were there. This was just a gathering of over 1,000 Cincinnatians who are fired up about this campaign and are itching to DO SOMETHING.

It's really a little bit overwhelming. On the news tonight, I learned that while we were at our meeting, Chelsea Clinton was three miles away, shaking hands at one of my favorite bars, Sully's.

Welcome to Battleground Ohio.

47. News from the great state of Texas!

70-plus rally for Obama volunteers

More than 70 local Barack Obama supporters rallied at a meeting Tuesday for grassroots volunteers who are backing the presidential candidate.

The Progressive Center, a local facility that houses other social and political events, hosted the gathering, which organizers said was designed to give Obama supporters a chance to meet and share volunteer strategies. Attorney Les Cassidy, Sylvia Samaniego and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi students organized the volunteers.

With organizers expecting about 30 attendees, people packed the center's first floor rooms, waving and shouting for television cameras. Cassidy, Samaniego and three representatives of Obama's national campaign briefed the crowd on the primary process in Texas.

"This is a grassroots campaign, and the things you do to get organized are the things that are going to win this campaign," Cassidy shouted from the front stairs to the houseful of people.

Kathleen Cook, a 38-year-old Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi student, said she heard about the event Monday and immediately decided to attend.

"I wanted to meet other Obama supporters," she said. "This has definitely exceeded my expectations."

You made my day!

I hope Ohio goes BIG for Obama. Maybe we can get some other OH Du'ers to weigh in, what's going on in northern OH: Cleveland, Toledo, etc. Have you heard anything about other areas? I wonder what's happening up in Mason  they are probably crying in their soup over McLame - I bet it's HUCKABEE country.

81. The organizers at the meeting...
... were so targeted. One would stand up and say, "I'll be working Butler and Warren County... WestChester and the northern suburbs."

(good luck with that one)

Another would say, "I'm running the West Side. People in Cincinnati tell me there's this east-west thing you have going on here. After the meeting, would someone explain it to me?" ;-)

It was just really wonderful to see that they seem to have this town all mapped out and ready to go. Kerry wasn't anywhere near this organized, and that was in the GENERAL election in a MUST-WIN state that he essentialy gave up on. :-(

Not this time, my friends, not this time.

Oh, and Mason?

61. The media really want Hillary to be the Dem nominee, so they keep moving the line in the sand back
after she loses another round of primaries and caucuses.

Now that Obama clearly has the momentum, the corporate media throw out the Clinton campaign's line that they're actually focusing on Texas and Ohio. This sounds eerily similar to Giuliani and Florida.

Personally, I can see Obama taking Ohio, despite the media. The Cincinnati and Columbus metro areas are very Republican. They hate the Clintons and REALLY despise Hillary. Then you have more of the same in rural Ohio. If Obama at least cuts in to Hillary's base in Democratic strongholds like Cleveland-Akron-Canton, Toledo and Dayton, Obama wins Ohio.

As for Gov. Strickland's endorsement of Hillary several weeks ago, I think that will come back to bite him in the ass. He was otherwise doing a lot of things that Ohioans approved. But when he announced his endorsement of Clinton, that knocked his credibility down a few pegs. I'm talking about a wide range of people from business owners to farmers to middle management at major companies.

95. Really good post!
Sounds to me like you've got Ohio down! That's exactly what I've been thinking... and I think the Obama people are right there with you.

Seems to me they're flooding Columbus and Cincinnati with staff, hoping to balance the institutional Democratic support she'll get north of Columbus with the independents and not-sold-on-Hillary Democrats in central and southwestern Ohio!

At 5:30 tonight, we have our first big Visibility Event for Obama on Fountain Square in downtown Cincinnati. If you drive by, honk and wave!

108. Obama crazies wake up
Has the sugar from the Obama-aid rot your brain? The media is doing whatever it takes to make sure Obama secure the Democratic nod. They tried to twist Bill Clinton's fairy tale comment try to make it to sound racist, every little victory Obama they blow it up and minimize any of Hillary victories. Look at the Super Tuesday coverage over at MSGOP, Rachel Maddow act liked winning the small states Obama won was more important than the big states Hillary won.

And none of you cult followers are concern about the media that's proping up your guy is the same media that help slimed Al Gore, Max Cleland, Howard Dean and John Kerry. I can bet those same media whores fawning over Obama will be the same ones repeating RNC talking points about him and there's no proof he can fight back. I found a Joe Wilson piece talking how McCain put Obama in his place. And the states he won like Utah and Idaho do you really believe those two states will go to him in the general election? if you do then you believe anything.

But Ohio is looking more like Waterloo. It will be a great opportunity for Obama to get a lock on the nomination. McCain will already have an organizational head start, and a deadlocked race up to the Democratic Convention will serve no one but the Republican ticket.

The summer and fall parades had a few folks from the other campaigns walking along with the County Democrats and then the Obama Team had 30-50 people wearing t-shirts, carrying home made signs, chanting and singing. Nobody could compete w/Obama (should have seen the caucus blow-out coming in August-October of 2007!)

I would like to see ONE that will be honest and FOR the citizens instead of for the Corporations before I die! I like Obama because he is FOR open and honest communications with the electorate! It is time I hope for the young and motivated citizens to take the lead and vote for someone that can actually change our way of doing business in Washington! Isn't it time!!
