Open Letter to Senator Clinton
Dear Mrs. Clinton,

You took your shot.

You had every advantage going in. Universal name recognition, huge sums of money, the backing of the
Democratic Party machine aparatus, a former president as spokesperson, a huge number of super-delegates who
committed to you before the first vote was cast, tens of millions in personal wealth available in a crisis, and the deep
pride you deservingly inspire in both men AND women as the most serious female contender for the Presidency in US history.

You tried a variety -- indeed a good number -- of strategies, messages, PR, slogans, spin, advertising, tones, advisors & managers.
You offered many sound policies, plans, papers, and proposals which have enriched the debate, and informed the electorate.

You (mostly) fought the good fight, based upon your belief that you should be President. You turned negative
at times, but found that this was not effective at increasing your own appeal, but on the whole your campaign
will still be judged as honorable.

Now, the people have spoken.

Please wrap things up with dignity. Not just for the good of you and your husband.
Not just for the good of your loyal, dignified, and passionate supporters. Not just for the good of your Party.

But rather for the good of each and every family - each person who deserves a better future - in this great nation.
Each of us, who cannot afford to have John McCain emerge as president of this land.

Yours truly,
America

or she will end up at the convention with a bunch of lawyers and even more cronies

12. At this stage
her chances of Victory - mathematically.

Are tiny. She would need to win ALL remaining contests - by a minimum margin of 60-40 - JUST to recapture the pledged delegates lead. Not to surge way ahead - just to pull even essentially.

The chances of that are slim.

She is now going "Ultra Negative" - because Mark Penn says so.

This then turns into a very destructive force for the party.

Even worse if she tries to use Florida or Michigan to supercede the current reality.

Even worse if the super delegates become the deciding factor.

42. The math shows that Mrs. Clinton's chances are very slim indeed
Mike Huckabee is "in the race" too - but at some point the writing does become clear.

At this stage, Senator Clinton would have to win ALL remaining contests by 60-40 - just to get to a 1 pledged delgate lead.

That is not likely.

So - a simple question to Hillary Supporters:

If she wins either Ohio or Texas by less than 10 points (though she needs to win by 20) - is enough then enough.

Or is her personal desire to be president more important than defeating John McCain?

14. It's all about the last deb ates. She's either going to lose with dignity or go down in flames.
If she goes sharply negative against Obama in the waning days of the contest, she's going to torch not just her chances to be president, but the Clinton brand itself. I think there's a lot of room for her to make substantial attacks against Obama's foreign policy experience and other areas, but it all depends on tone, and it's going to be tempting for her to cross the line into personal attacks, like the worthless plagiarism charge her campaign has been pushing (and denying that it's been pushing). If she takes the low road, she's going to lose AND she's going to ruin her reputation.

Obama might lose this election. She could run again in 4 years. In 8 years, she'll still be younger than McCain is now, and in much better health. But if she flames out in these final days, she risks becoming another Lieberman.

20. You are very right about tone - and the phoney Plagarism charge
which is now blowing back big time.

It is that tone, and the sense of desperation it re-inforces, that actually hurts her own campaign and prevents her from
getting on a real message that can rally people around her.

Maybe it is her campaign strategist fault, but it is very late in the game for her to try to
"re-cast" herself yet again.

Her chances are Extraordinarily small.

Unless she tries "legal shenanigans" with Michican & Florida, or "going after Obama's pledged delegates" or using the super-delegates.

A simple question to you then:

If she loses Texas or Ohio - then is enough enough?

After all - Mike Huckabee is still "in the race" - but at some point the writing is on the wall.

I think Demo5 meant to call out MY join date. Oh yeah, and while at it - why not call out my "Low number of posts"

To which I say "ROFLMFAO"

I am really lauging at *some* "thousand plus post" GODS OF DU - trying to deny new people voices.

It doesn't work.

It's a bit like the early 150+ Super delegates who were arm-twisted by Bill Clinton to support his wife
LONG before a ballot was cast by ANY voter - trying to overturn the will of the People.

We get a voice - I've been a life-long democrat - and I've registered over 1000 new people in the party since last summer.

*some* "Old Time" DU posters cannot quash our voices.

44. You mean the delegates where there was no campaign?
Where nobody heard the message of the two candidates?

Of the state where Hillary said "that campaign wont matter"?

Where Hillary pledged to support the Party's decision on delegates, and continued
her pledge until AFTER Iowa and New Hampshire and SC (so they would not get pissed at her), and only
"found a voice" for the state 2 days before the no-delegates contest?

I'm just clarifying - is that what you mean?

Seems she really would like to destroy the party in that case.

the best explanation i've hard to date is this. with a vague message like "hope and change," people can project meaning onto that blank slate, and that's what i see, among other things. i also think there is a kind of weirdness operating along the colin powell lines, i.e., an aswummption regarding character that or may not be warranted.

Hillary should not step aside until she has exhausted all her options. She's still leading in 3 upcoming states where she can pick up many delegates if she wins. Barak Obama, or any other candidate, would do the same and would be justified in doing so.

51. Nothing in post said the "men should take charge"
That is a standard "veiled sexism" charge - that has been roundly disscredited, and
is silly and ineffective to begin with.

Now a simple question. The math is not in Senator Clinton's favor. She would need to win ALL remaining contests 60-40 just to re-capture a 1 pledged delegate lead.

So - if she fails to win either TX or OH by 10 points - should she back Obama?

Mike Huckabee is "in the race too" with "options" - but at some point the math becomes clear.

If she persists after not winning TX and OH in landslides - would that not indicate that personal ambition to be
president is superceding winning in November?

I hope that Hillary fights on until everyone has had a chance to vote, only then will this be over. I don't think that Obama is prepared to be president and I want her to hang in there until the bitter end.

BTW, she should be addressed as Senator Clinton in a formal letter, not Mrs. Clinton.

If Senator Clinton is behind in:

Pledged delegates from actual contests where people campaigned (i.e. not counting Florida and Michigan)

Popular Vote

and Contests

Should she concede defeat on June 7th?

Or do you think she should "fight to the convention" - and "do anything to win"

Which do you think??

59. She should stay in the race until every state has had a chance to vote.
The party also needs to accept the FL delegates or risk losing FL once again to the Republicans in November. It was an even playing field since no one campaigned in that state and shouldn't be that big of a problem to the party to count their delegates. MI is a problem though because only Hillary was on the ballot, maybe they could hold another primary.

57. Well then why not answer the question about the Math
Nobody else has. Your post is just a flame of frustration - and not an attempt to answer the math.

Senator Clinton DOES need to win ALL remaining contests by a 60-40 margin JUST to recapture a 1 pledged delegate lead.

Would you say that is likely? I don't think many would.

So - when SHOULD Mrs. Clinton concede?

After March 4th - if she wins OH and TX by less than say 10 points (even though she needs to win by 20)??

After June 7th? When all contests are over?

Or should she fight "at all costs" up to the convention - including trying to count Michigan and FL or do it with super-delegates?

I.O.W. - When will be the right time? Since you don't agree with me that we are there yet, which is fine.

60. You HAVE NO MATH.
Edited on Wed Feb-20-08 02:50 PM by AlertLurker
Can you zombie children of planet Barak Obamoid kiddies not do your OWN homework? I realize that many of you find it difficult to put a sentence together using proper grammar and spelling, but surely you can add, subtract, multiply and divide? Do they no longer teach arethmetic in USAmerican high schools?

If Hillary gets 60% of the remaining unpledged delegates and S-Ds, she has 2067: About 42 more than the required 2025. This is not statistically impossible, but improbable, all the same. Considering that she currently has 60% of the superdelegates (so far), it's also highly irresponsible to speculate that Obama will get 60% of those remaining, however.

To answer your next question, of course I'm frustrated. Not because I'm a Hillary supporter, but because I like NEITHER candidate; I'm just a cranky old bitch and I really hate to wipe the noses of somebody else's kids. It's NOT MY JOB, just like doing your math for you is NOT MY JOB. If you make an assertion, back it up and DO YOUR OWN WORK. By the way, I got my numbers from: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/democratic_delegate_count.html

Lastly, I believe that Hillary should exhaust EVERY avenue before giving up. This is the only way the system works properly for everyone who voted for HER. That's her main responsibility to her voters, period.

If she loses TX, OH and PA, I suspect that she will bow out. She may stay in the race until the Convention, however, especially if Obama fails to garner sufficient support (a supermajority) and she may have a chance to defeat him there, even if he is ahead in the delegate count at that time.

P.S. "America" is a CONCEIT, not a country.

72. Try real math
Edited on Wed Feb-20-08 05:10 PM by sloppyjoe25s
there are probably local community college courses you could use to brush up?

consider that a response to your personal attack:

QUOTE OF YOU :"Can you zombie children of planet Barak Obamoid kiddies not do your OWN homework? I realize that many of you find it difficult to put a sentence together using proper grammar and spelling, but surely you can add, subtract, multiply and divide? Do they no longer teach arethmetic in USAmerican high schools?"

which was OH SO substantive.

You might want to be careful - since I have 3 masters degrees from Stanford - and no not in "fluff" - in engineering, computer science, and business. I graduated Suma Cum Laude from a top US liberal arts school - with double majors in Physics and Economics - and was a Fulbright Scholar. I speak 4 languages fluently - and was reading Kafka in Russian and Garcia Marquez in Spanish - while you continued to wonder what they meant by "symbolism" in your kiddy literature class...

So i can guarantee i am more educated than you - so to your insult I reply at the same level:

"ROFLMAO"

And by the way - you totally missed the point - Mrs. Clinton needs to win 60-40 all remaining contests to catch up in PLEDGED DELEGATES. Pointing to her lead in Superdelegates is EXACTLY THE POINT. The only way she can possibly win is to try to "overturn the will of the voters by using Superdelegates - MOST of whom were the result of early arm-twisting by Bill Clinton - LONG before a single vote was cast - back when she was working so hard to look "Inevitable".

Your post only further proves my point. Facts suck huh?

Some questions:

Why the heck would anyone have three Masters degrees? Could you not manage a doctorate in at least ONE field? A P.Eng, even?

I have never heard of someone with a Masters in Engineering refer to the degree as anything other than the professional designation. Do you not have a license?

How the heck does someone who has such obvious trouble putting two sentences together coherently manage to graduate summa cum laude from a "top US liberal arts school," let alone somewhere as prestigious as Stanford? Who wrote your three theses, Einstein?

Why would anyone attend a "top US liberal arts school" for Physics and Economics?

How the heck does someone who cannot spell "summa cum laude" graduate "summa cum laude" ANYWHERE?

If you had actually been a Fulbright Scholar, wouldn't that mean that you actually graduated "egregia cum laude?" I once knew a Fulbright Scholar who studied at St. Andrews, and this was the degree of distinction he received. Man, was he smart! Smart enough to know that Kafka wrote in German, rather than Russian, anyway.

If you actually speak four different languages fluently, is one of them English? If one of them was French, perhaps you would be so kind to explain my sig line, why it is so important and where it comes from, to me?

If your posts are an example of the work of a former Fulbright scholar with a Stanford Masters in Engineering, fluent in four languages, I shudder at the sorry state of USAmerican acadaemia. I not only think that you have been horribly shortchanged, I believe that you should complain, long and hard.

I believe that you are both a poseur and liar. The only language you seem to exhibit fluency in, on this post at least, is bullshit. I'd definitely give you the "summa cum laude" for THAT, though.

As far as your "facts" go, you only seem to make new assertions as you go along. Your point regarding the S-Ds was nowhere in your earlier posts, but now you don't want me to take them into consideration?

I told you where I got my numbers from and showed you the arethmetic necessary to arrive at my conclusion. You showed me nothing. Nice research! Stanford would be SO proud! If you have even graduated from Obedience School, I'd be happily surprised.

I am merely an lowly Agricultural College graduate, but even I can tell when someone is full of shit.

73. And if she does what you say
and fights to the bitter end - to "win at all cost" and "steal the nomination"

If she loses - we will have a bitterly divided party - and have handed McCain a huge lead against Obama.

If she wins with those tactics - Bye bye Democratic presidency - for the next 30 years.

82. WTF is wrong with you?
People who write the kind of utter tripe you just wrote in post #72 are the worst sorts of people you EVER meet on boards like these.

You have posted no facts, yet demand accountability from others with false outrage; you rely on logical fallacies like strawmen and appeals to authority instead of engaging in any kind of serious debate; you misrepresent your posts, you misrepresent your personal life and obvious lack of education with wild abandon; you post absolute GARBAGE like post #72 and the fact that you are LYING is so utterly TRANSPARENT to everyone else but you that it is actually BATHETIC, rather than merely pathetic.

What's even WORSE is that you managed to fool poor greguganus with your bullshit. Proud of it?

I just want to make sure that there isn't one single person who read this thread that doesn't know that you are full of shit.

Your behaviour completely disgusts me, but I'm not going to put you on ignore. I consider exposing frauds like you a public service. Perhaps others will not be so cavalier with their lies, in future.

The system is the system. Let it all play out. It's a close race. As long as both campaigns are avoiding low dirty Rovian tricks, we should be ok.

81. Hillary staying in the race
just gives the Obama campaign a little more experience dealing with negative attacks prior to him facing off against the GOP. It also keeps him at or near the top of each news cycle. On top of that, it keeps the money flowing in to his campaign, much of which he will be able to use against McCain prior to the convention.

The math is such that Hillary is all but done, so having her hang around really is a net gain for Obama in many ways.
