And, there is a very deep concern among many people that Obama will put a happy face on the same old policies because he REFUSES to get to the heart of the true issues...I don't blame Obama. I blame the American PEOPLE for castrating and destroying every politician that dares speaks the unpleasant truth about the harsh consequences of our government's actions for the past fifty years.
If we don't address that fact that FOR PROFIT health insurance companies can't allow all Americans to have access to decent affordable care, we WON'T solve the health care crisis...
If we don't address the fact that corporations are creating a global slave labor work force, and they need to be FOUGHT and their power DISMANTLED, you don't solve the economic crisis....
If we don't get to the root of these problems, we will only crop the surface and every ugly consequence will surface again and again and again and again and again...
And, unfortunately, it seems to take a crisis situation for people to be ready to create real and lasting change. The kind of change that needs to happen can't occur with superficial policy changes and trying to work the broken system.
So, there is a logical reason for people believing that perhaps another four years of Republican hell will be necessary for Americans to wake the fuck up. There is a very real danger that Obama will be the scapegoat for Bush's destructive policies (economic, foreign, domestic). The shit has yet to hit the fan and boy, oh, boy, will it soon. The American people have a memory of about 20 seconds, and it could easily happen that Obama will be scapegoated for things that he has no control over.
There is every reason to be deeply concerned that the progress we have made will be thwarted by a sense of FALSE hope & YES, WE CAN. America needs a period of deep contemplation and open discussion. We do not need a rock star. It may be what we WANT. It is the LAST THING we need. This candidacy seems to be more a symptom of Americans wanting easy answers and false platitudes instead of real sacrifice and active engagement in the political system. And, that scares the hell out of those who have a understanding of political history and the laws of reality.
Do we want John McCain as President? HELL NO.
May we NEED the current political situation to escalate to full out crisis before we embrace true change? Most likely. I hope I am wrong. I hope Obama will be what you expect him to be. I hope I am proved cynical and jaded, and all of you are right. There is no joy in making these observations, it would be much more pleasant to simply go along & believe. But, I just don't.
And, it is unfortunate, sad, and devastating.
This country needs to be mature enough to confront the truth & accept individual & collective responsibility for what America has become. And, it has become a very ugly thing.
I am one of you, so flame away, if you will. I really don't care. I think these points are valid, and need to be added to the discussion. I am sorry to anyone who doesn't like it. Neither do I.
(To the person who has the front page recommendation of a vulgar rant with violent overtones, I am really stunned DU allows that kind of post to even stay up - and it boggles the mind that it became a most recommended)...
