Al Gore as Obama's VEEP? You can't make this stuff up. |
|
I just read, right here on DU, a post that suggested Al Gore as Barack Obama's VEEP.
So, am I alone in thinking this is hilariously delusional?
Al Gore as back-up to Barack Obama?
I guess we really are through the rabbit-hole.

The vice-presidency is whatever the president and vice president want it to be. Obama basically says as vice president you get to keep doing what your doing on climate change, except with the full support of the white house behind you. Al strong arms congress, roams the globe to create a new treaty, and wherever he goes, people know he is speaking for the president and the white house.
Its still improbable, but not impossible.

As you can see from my avatar, Gore was always and still is my first choice for president. I think we all know he is a most proficient and efficient public servant, BUT he absolutely loathes the campaigning aspect of it all. Obama's got the campaigning mojo for both of them.
A few months ago I would have found this idea as laughable as you do, but consider: I would venture to guess that Gore would have even more say in an Obama/Gore administration than he did in the Clinton/Gore administration, which would be attractive to Gore and to Americans.
And they'd be absolutely unbeatable. Gore understands how important a democratic win is this fall. I think that's more important to him than any "always a bridesmaid never a bride" memes.
I always wanted a Gore/Obama ticket, but I'd take Gore any way I can.

Obama/Gore would be a slam dunk. Don't think you can speak for Al ... you can't. Another thing Al brings to the table is the comfort everyone would have in having Gore as the person who would be the person a heartbeat away from the Presidentcy. We don't like to talk about it, but w/ Obama there is an increased fear that someone might try to do Barack harm in light of the last period of time we had leaders such as Bobby Kennedy & MLK. I have personally heard talk that a really strong Obama veep pick could work as a deterant and leave a strong message that the level of leadership and iniatives would continue even in Obama's absence no matter what tragic event caused it.
An Al Gore veep pick would be the awesome and serve an even greater purpose than it did under Clinton. They would 'almost' be co-presidents!

33. I think its unlikely in the extreme. But impossible? No. |
|
Neither you nor I or anyone else except maybe Tipper and a few close confidants knows what Al Gore thinks about the current presidential race or his own legacy (or even if he cares). However, given that none of us know what Gore is thinking, I can't rule out completely the possibility that Gore might decide to accept the number two slot (although I think its unlikely it would be offered). Why would he do it? Well, maybe (and I'm utterly speculating here) Gore feels like Obama (or Clinton for that matter, althought I see it far less likely that he'd be HRC's number 2) has a chance to make history as the first African American presdient and Gore wants to part of that history. So he decides to take the number 2 spot -- even though its a a been there done that proposition -- to be par of that history. In return, Obama (or HRC) agrees to give Gore a more visible platform than otherwise might be the case to promote the prevention of climate change.
Fantasy? Probably. Impossible? Not

American political figure like Gore to be a part of the WH? Do you think we should out of hand reject Albert Gore as our VP? I give it about a .01 % chance, but if it meant the global warming issue got center stage, then would it be such a bad thing?????? It is not Obama's supporters being "smug and vain", it is wanting what is best for our nation. Maybe it is a "bitter and upset" Hillary supporter that would want to deny something great for our country. I want the strongest VP candidate for our nominee that we can get, whether it is Obama OR Hillary. The US needs all the strong people in the right places of gov't that it can get.

He might look at it as a way to more effectively further the global warming issue. Perhaps he didn't want to campaign for the last year, like the rest have had to do. I don't know, but not everyone needs the Presidency to be happy. Mr. Gore is probably in a different mindset now than he was in in 2000. Like I said before, the chance is tiny, but it would great for the American people.

but only as public service, and he's in the catbird seat as far as Obama is concerned (or Hillary, for that matter). He can demand autonomy. With Obama, it's unclear what his management style will be. We simply don't know if he's the type who lets people do the job they were hired to do without interference, or not.
But I can't see him as VP. The Cheney-type VP happened because of Bush's inherent weakness and inexperience. Obama is just as inexperienced, but I don't see him as someone who's easily led. That's a good thing, unless he carries it so far that he's unable to cede any authority at all.

As an added bonus such a match-up would surely cause Rush Limbaugh to suffer an aneurysm.
