Hmmmm if not McCain...then how about
Arlen Specter. Here is the thought. He is a moderate republican from a pivotal state. He is in a dogfight with an arch right winger for the primary nod. He might lose. Meaning he is out of a job.

McCain has said no in enough ways that even if he changed his mind it would get ugly.

Specter is well-respected as a moderate. If Kerry want to reach out to disaffected republicans. Specter might be a better choice than say a Bill Cohen.. Who everyone would certainly yawn at.

Absolutely no way. McCain I could take, but not Specter.

40. I feel the same, exactly.
I have strong misgivings about McCain, but I respect him for taking on his Party's establishment repeatedly on matters of principle. If somehow McCain found his way onto our ticket (I can't imagine how), I would see it as a Government of National Unity in a time of very real Crisis, and in that way I could bring myself to vote for it. Specter may in some ways be "moderate", but he's no maverick. He wouldn't bring enough character, stature, and personal integrity to our ticket to warrant even considering the huge negative trade off involved in that type of shift to the right.

12. Even though he got the bullet right
(And yes, i know no one seems to believe the computer mockups in the last few years proving that it had to happen that way), he would bring nothing to the ticket. He's unpopular with the Dems, he's unpopular with the leftist Dems, and he's unpopular with his own party for, amongst other things, voting not to remove Clinton from office.

Nothing would be gained with Specter. Nothing would be gained with any Republican in Congress. McCain has a little upside, but much larger downside. Specter has no upside.

Unless we found a pro-choice Republican who opposed Bush on a few issues, there is no reason to go that route. We will win this one by being unlike the Republicans, not like them.

Although Christie Todd Whitmann... NO!!

10. Where are all of these ridiculous 'republican for Vp' posts coming from?
Edited on Tue Apr-13-04 11:41 AM by bowens43
Here's a clue, we are Democrats. Our party is made up of Democrats. If we wanted a Republican as VP we would vote for Bush. In fact, if by some perverse twist of fate a Repug was given the VP slot , I for one, would vote for Bush. Our party is already way too far to the right. I would NEVER support any Democratic candidate that approved of putting a Repug in a position of power or who approved of the further dilution our values and our principles.

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! 14. disaffected moderate republicans who....
... are leaving the party and trying to change the Democrats into a moderate party. Which is funny, because I thought that official Democrats are moderates, and that the neocons moved the center post closer to them so that Democrats seem like wacky tree-hugging libruls. (And what's wrong with tree hugging anyway? ;-) )

18. I cannot comprehend why any GOP candidates would be ...
considered for VP. The thought is ludicrous, and will not happen.

I have seen many threads on this, and all of them go nowhere. My appologies to those who insist on pushing this stuff on these boards, but I really think it is kind of frivolous and a great waste of energy and time.

While we should be bringing all of our energies together to get bush out of OUR WH, trite little things like this keep popping up...:(

35. Christ
if people think we need a republican on the ticket to win then we are in bigger trouble than I realized.

If kerry were to choose a repub then that's it - I'll vote green or Nader. I've never voted repub before, and I'm not about to now.

Just the fact that McCain was being considered enough that he himself had to say he wouldn't take the position is pathetic.

Believe it or not people - there are MORE liberals in this nation than conservative fascists! You want to tap the huge number of voters that don't vote? Get a REAL progressive on the ticket. Running a repub is NOT the way to beat the repubs.

43. Gee, why not Ashcroft?
Why are people always suggesting Kerry should have a Repug as a running mate, as if none of the Democrats are qualified? Probably about as likely as * dumping Cheney from the ticket and putting Hilary on it.

44. NO!
"Reach out to disaffected Republicans" my ass.

How about reaching out to disaffected Democrats and disaffected non-voters?

These suggestions for Republican running mates reflect defeatism and a lack of core principles.

45. .
Jeez people, relax, that is ridiculous!
The poster already made clear that it wasn't a dead serious suggestion and that he doesn't believe that a Repub makes sense as a Dem VP.
Two fucking days ago he wrote on this same thread:

"And yet there are people onthis site who think a Pro-lifer like McCain would be just fine. I don't thionk any republican makes sense either. I was just trying to make a point"

46. Maybe it's just me,
but I think that someone running on the Democratic ticket should choose a Democrat. C=MI, Conservatism=Mental Illness - choosing a Repub VP would be enabling.

47. Stealing a republican
Dont hate the other side because they are republicans. Stealing a high level respected republican from the GOP. Does nothing but help the Democratic party and its chances to recruit more independents and even republicans.

48. Fuck the Republicans....
Edited on Sat Apr-17-04 03:28 PM by Hell Hath No Fury
I am a member of the Democratic Party. I don't need no sticking GOP infesting my party so that it looks more like the GOP than the party of RFK and FDR. GET IT?

I have spent 3+ years under the yoke of a Republican, and a crazy-ass one at that.

I am DONE.

If the Republicans don't like the way their party is acting these days (and who could blame them) then I advise that they take back their damn party from the idiots and return it to the party of Lincoln and Teddy R.

That's a party I could respect.

50. Why not just
vote for all the republicans in the country, and be done with it?

It would be nice if you would actually state your real purpose.

52. McCain yes, Specter no
I don't want Arlen Specter anywhere near a Democratic ticket. The same goes for George Voinovich and Chuck Hagel and just about any other "moderate" Republican not surnamed Chafee.

54. Specter? Why not Gingrich? Fellow Clinton hater, smarter - Asimov fan
And since we are scraping the bottom of the barrel, how about Grover Norquist? Dick Armey? Ken Starr? I belueve they are all available - more so than McCain, Specter who have jobs.

55. No Republican on the ticket, but I just have to say...
Arlen Specter is the best news story. Specter is being called Liberal by his own party. Showing the far right will stab their own in the back. Specter needs to vote for Kerry. Haven't seen anything like this since Bob Barr on C-Span speaking out against 'The Patriot Act.' You have to be way far right for Bush.

57. Bob Barr spoke out against the patriot act?
And Dick Armey spoke out against the Iraq war. Either hardcore Republicans have a change of heart every now and then or they are very senile.
