*Warning: Deceptive Robo Calls Made to Voters in NC, Kentucky, Oregon and WVA

Please warn voters in North Carolina who may have gotten these deceptive calls.
Kentucky, Oregon and West Virginia are also at risk.

NC's final day of voting is tomorrow, Tues May 6.
Report information about the origin of the calls at 1-866-OUR VOTE (1-866-687-8683)

According to Alex Koppelman at Salon, 182,236 illegal robo calls were made to voters in North Carolina on April 24 & 25, during the middle of NC's early voting period. At least some of the voters were registered, many were African American.

Other states with upcoming primaries, Kentucky, West Virginia and Oregon also are at risk according to the complaint filed by the NC NAACP on May 3rd.. Millions of calls were made.

The group behind the calls, Women's Voices, Women Vote - made two different types of calls, depending on the target.
More from the Complaint by the NC NAACP

Calls targeting white women

(See Ex. 2)
On calls, apparently to white women, a woman said: "Hi. Just a reminder. Your voter registration form is in the mail to you.
Your voice counts and your vote . Sign it, date it and send it in. Thanks!"

Calls made by an African American man, who identified himself as Lamont Williams (hereafter "Lamont") gave the following message to other homes:

"Hello. This is Lamont Williams. In the next few days, you will receive a voter-registration packet in the mail. All you need to do is fill it out, sign it, date and return your application. Then, you will be able to vote and make your voice heard. Please return your registration form when it arrives. Thank you." According to WVWV, "Mr. Williams is a professional voice talent," and his calls only went to men and a woman was used to contact women."

The "Lamont" tell voters they aren't registered according to the NC NAACP complaint.

Lamont's calls tell people that are registered that they are not and that the only way they can vote is to wait a few days, get a form in the mail, fill it out and mail it back in. As one commentator said, "Whether the result of deliberate design or massive negligence on the part of WVWV and/or its vendors in terms of the timing of the calls and the determination of who would be called, the end result is something which rightly raised suspicions about the intent of this program."

Does WVWV really want to help voters register to vote?

NC allows same day registration during early voting, but the anonymous robo calls didn't mention that.
Regardless of what state you live in, you can report information about the origin of the calls at 1-866-OUR VOTE (1-866-687-8683)

States that are future and past victims:

"The robo-calls in N.C. were part of a massive set of calls and mailings in 24 states in late April 2008 that included Kentucky, West Virginia, North Carolina, and Oregon--all states where the voter registration deadline has passed and the primary is approaching. Two months earlier, on 6 and 7 February during other primary campaigns, Lamont, or someone acting for WVWV, made millions of calls in 22 states, including Virginia. At that time, the registration deadline had passed in Virginia and the primary was days away. The resulting chaos led to an investigation by the State Police and more promises from WVWV to change its deceptive practices."

I am so mad about all of this happening. Why is this not in mainstream news??? Why can't we just have an election and elect who the people (all people) want? Has anyone contacted the news stations???

6. I'm very angry about this and I want an explanation from Hillary's campaign.
I see Hillary's connections with this group being whitewashed in the media. Months of blah blah blah Reverend Wright and this is being totally ignored!

I am a NC voter. I voted during one-stop voting on Saturday. I don't believe for one minute that this group's "mistakes" are honest accidents. This is voter suppression plain and simple. It's obvious that this is voter suppression aimed at reducing the black turnout here in NC on Tuesday, to give Hillary a chance to win the state.

I'm disgusted. I'm appalled. I want answers.

9. I still cannot get over
that this is a voting ADVOCACY group using that as a cover for vote suppression. It's the ultimate in betrayal.

Did WVWV start out as a legitimate group and then morph somewhere along the way (about when Hillary's odds started going down and Barack's stock was on the rise?) Or was it initiated with the purpose of election manipulation in mind?

If this were a Rethug group, we'd be up in arms. It's very damaging to the Dems in general, but we need to get to the bottom of this if we truly want Democratic elections in this country.

Look at all the states these people were in.

Those databases should be regulated in some way. :grr:

I agree with those who say that voter registration should be automatic. In other words, you aren't required to vote, but you are always registered, say as soon as you get a drivers license in whatever state you're living in. Seems to me the whole process would be less susceptible to voter intimidation and suppression.

birth certificate is registered? When you come of age, you're mailed a card and the state database moves your name into the voting pool. Then, only new immigrants would have to register.

ETA: And, people who move to a different state.

What really p!sses me off is that the Diebold software is guarded like the grail, but any idiot who wants to mess with voting can buy a database that targets black voters, latino voters, low income voters, students or military families. I bet I could get my hands on one in nothing flat.

21. that makes sense to me
seems like it would simplify things all around. You are just registered in the state of birth and you update your address if you move to another state. System throws out any duplicates. Not hard.

The way it's set up now, it's like election tampering is protected.

Seems like going through the DMV is a weak way to ensure registration.
We've heard too many reports of people going that route and ending up NOT registered.

...when people can no longer even attempt to defend the actions of the candidate they support and instead resort to attempting to smear the other candidate as a retort.

19. May 5 N&O reports another odd robocall about voting, different tactic this time
More illegal robocalls in Durham?
Submitted by ryanteaguebeckwith on May 5, 2008 - 11:14am.

A Durham voter got another odd robocall about voting.

Christina Headrick, a former reporter for the N&O, says she received a misleading call Sunday from a "woman with a professional sounding voice" about mail-in voting.

Here is what the woman said:

"Have you ever wondered how you can vote by mail? From the convenience of your own home? Your vote has never been more important than it is in this critical election year. And this is a great way to ensure your voice is heard. If you would like to vote by mail, please press 1. If not, hang up."

Absentee ballots must have been requested before last Tuesday and returned in the mail by 5 p.m. today. In short, there is no way that it would be helpful for anyone to receive information about mail-in voting yesterday.

She tried to look for a caller ID using *69, but the number was either out of the area or from a restricted caller. It is against state law for robocallers to not identify themselves.

She has notified elections watchdog Democracy North Carolina, which is asking Attorney General Roy Cooper and the State Board of Elections to look into the calls.

54. CLINTON'S CAMPAIGN HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THESE CALLS! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
Those robocalls were none of Hillary's doing they are done by political tricksters like a guy who calls himself Rob Morrow who has used them against Hillary here in SC, too.

Morrow is a kind of political troll. He likes to make hash of the political system and prides himself on it. As long as he can make political division and upheaval, he's happy as a pig in... slop!

He got access to Ron Paul's calling system called Advokit and used it to make these calls in SC.

I reported him to the FBI, because in his openers to the calls here, he falsely impersonated an FBI agent making these calls.

And there are others out there who try to skew the political process, and not just against Obama but against Hillary Clinton and other candidates as well.

Didn't they contact the SOS's to find out Voter Registration DEADLINES?.?.?

I'm sure it isn't THAT hard to find out this info.

Why would they tell Voters to mail their Registrations back to them, instead of the SOS's?.?.?

Isn't that a misdirection, sending the registrations back to WV?.?.?

Why are they only targeting African Americans?.?.?

Certainly, there are other single potential voters from all races.

Why would THEY use FAKE names when robo calling?.?.?

Why didn't THEY IDENTIFY THEIR ORGANIZATION WHEN CALLING?.?.?

Seems to me they are NOT a serious organization. Perhaps they are trying to weed out potential voters from our party.

It's such a shame that these people have started behaving like republicons.
