Flashback, March, 2000: Bill Clinton on a "Federal Gas-tax Holiday":
Q. Mr. President, in light of the fact that OPEC has decided to increase production, do you see it as a mistake for the Senate to proceed with a bill that would suspend the gas tax? And if it reached your desk, would you veto it?

A. Well, I don't expect it to reach my desk because there seems to be bipartisan opposition to it in the House, including among the leadership. But the problem I have with it, apart from what it might do to the Highway Trust Fund and the spending obligations that have already been incurred by the acts of Congress, the budgets, is that I'm not sure that the savings would be passed along to the consumers in addition to that....

And, remember, the leadership in the House who were opposed to it, as well as the Democrats, were Republicans.

6. interresting, but his opposition seems to start with that it would come from the HTF like McCain
wants to do now. Whereas Clinton wants to create a windfall profits tax on the oil companies. However, his latter point is still questionable.

12. And what chance does the windfall profits tax
have for this summer?

Does anyone think that the repukes would let this pass the senate? Does anyone believe that Bush would sign it into law?

This is pure and simple pandering. Hillary knows that this isn't going to happen this year, she is using it as an election ploy to get votes, that's it.

19. Don't know. But, if Bill wasn't sure the savings would get passed
on to the consumer in 2000, what makes him sure of it now?

22. Now, if you actually did a little analysis (instead of just repeating old news)
You'd see that the plan combines a "gas tax holiday" with a windfall profits tax, so Bill's objections (as one would expect) have been noted).

23. And, since Hillary knows that a windfall profits tax has a snowball's
chance in hell of passing before the summer driving season, making this an issue is nothing more than political pandering.

But, don't take my word for it. If you do some analysis on your own, you'll come to the same conclusion.

24. Of course its political pandering
Edited on Mon May-05-08 07:38 PM by depakid
Just like Obama's vote for Bush's insane energy bill and promotion of corn based ethanol was pandering to Iowa and certain coprorate interests.

As I've said many, many times- no candidate has a responsible energy plan. And it's likely in America than none of them could get elected if they did.

Americans demand to have their cake and eat it too- thermodynamics notwithstanding.
