Jonathan King on CNN says NC "Research Triangle Park" (NC) is Key to Obama! |
|
Edited on Tue May-06-08 06:13 PM by KoKo01
This is the "High Tech Area" who have mix of African-American Voters and those Scientists and Engineers who've moved into NC with Advanced Degrees who are the folks Obama appeals to.
We in NC anxiously await the results...I live in Research Triangle Area...but am amongst more Conservative Oldie IBM'ers...although Hubby is Bio-Tech Involved in the Triangle.
We both are going for Obama as "last minute" decide.
It will be interesting to see how it all turns out. Voting closes here in NC at 7:30 p.m...EST...and the state is very diverse. But King is going to be focusing on Research Triangle and while he didn't mention it...Charlotte is the 2nd in the USA for BANKING (bigger than Chicago and second to NY)...and I gotta believe they are going for Hillary.. ROBERT RUBIN of CITI-BANK...big CLINTON FAN who pushed through deregulation legislation that's led to our demise.
Match of Titans...it's exciting! I might stay up way long to watch this one!

30. Yeah...but those folks who you think are "igorant" are "PEOPLE," too and if we Dems |
|
haven't been able to win them over to OUR SIDE so that they go with their Evangelical Pastors...it's because the Hope for Change with Bill Clint and Jimmy Carter gave them SHIT! Moved Jobs Overseas and left them in the Dust. Tobacco Legislation even left them without their farms and other legislation went over to Giant Agribusiness so that a farm with Dairy "grazing cows" and "pigs who ate slop" got taken over by BIG AGRI-BUISNESS...that started under Clinton's NAFTA and MONSANTO...and now a "truck farmer" can't even make a living and his wife can't make things sewing trinkets to sell on the "roadside Farmer's stands" because WalMart seels her Creative Stuff for pennies from Chinese Workers and her hubbyies Pigs and Dairy and Chickens have gone to "Smithfield, Purdue and other BIG BUSINESS where they CLONE so all the stuff TASTES THE SAME...and AGRIBUSINESS uses MONSANTO SEEDS and GMO stuff KILLING OUR KIDS WITH ALLERGIES!
A bad bargain with the Devil of NEW TECHNOLOGY that wasn't "Properly Vetted" for IMPACT ...imho......:-(

7. Yes... I DVR CNN and skip through all the bs talk because of King's maps |
|
I feel the same way about Chuck Todd. All the talking heads can go fly a kite. I want numbers and counties and demographics.

11. Me too...but I channel surf between them and MSNBC..and TPM for coverage |
|
...at least before tonight. I'll probably check my "local channels" if they can get beyond the Rape/Murder/Mayhem stories to focus on this election.
Remember NC is Home of Blackwater, USA and many Military Bases plus the "Triangle Insittute" spy/black ops operation for the Pentagon..etc. We are a very weird state.

My husband and I were always trying to move to RTP for the last 15 years, lol. Now we're retired back in PA.
It's a perfect demographic for Obama, that's true.

that this probably wouldn't be a late night; predictions are that we'll hear fairly soon after the polls close who prevails.

13. At least for NC over 325,000 folks voted EARLY...so it depends on the reporting... |
|
BTW...we got the DRE Machines OUT (except for Handicapped) and we've put in reforms that many other states haven't. We have "Paper Trail" but the votes are still counted on "Opti-Scan" machines. It's a compromise..but our situation is more safeguarded due to "activists who worked hard for reform" but it doesn't mean we could get all we wanted with Legislation (because of having to compromise) but we did good and there were DU'ers who were involved in the State Voting Reforms. DU'er "Who Counts the Votes" won an ACLU AWARD because of her efforts but her efforts were also supported by rabid voting rights advocates like your's truly and so many other "helping hands." It ain't perfect here..but it's better than many states.. And...I day and night thank all those here on DU who worked so hard for Voting Reform after the "Bush Selection."
I'm so excited to watch this...and if there are problems in NC..there's stuff in place to deal with it...finally!

I never knew a DUer won an ACLU award. And it might not be perfect, but it's better than a lot of other states.

HA!
Shouldn't Bill have expected the "same chance" when he and Hillary cozied up to the VERY SAME PEOPLE who Trashed them like Mellon-Scaife and Ruppert Murdoch?
Shouldn't they have expected to have the same courtesy that Poppy got for his "ill-begotten-evil doer-slacker SON?"
I feel sad that the Clintons for all their "new ideas" in early 90's didn't seem to get the NET ROOTS REVOLUTION!
But...it's what it is..

17. It was the "Womens Voices/Women's Vote" fiasco about disenfranchising the |
|
African-American voting BASE of the Party that threw me over the edge. And that liberals like John Podesta who was founder of "Center for American Progress" and "Think Progress Blog" along with Maggie Williams and other Clintonites on their BOARD OF DIRECTORS doing this stuff that TURNED ME.
I was Undeclared. Kucinich was my Candidate...but hoping for GORE to come in and be RESTORED...But that wasn't to happen...
It was the Voter Disenfranchisement by (supposedly Liberal) former Clinton Administration Folks who turned me because it made me ill.

You know, people who live outside of the Southeast don't understand North Carolina, just like I don't know jack about Idaho or Montana. Or North or South Dakota, for that matter.
But in the three major metropolitan areas (the Research Triangle Park, which is Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill), Charlotte (and a BOATLOAD of surrounding smaller towns) and the Piedmont Triad (Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem), you're talking about 1.7MM, 2.2MM and 1.5MM urban dwellers, respectively. These areas are blue, and white people there have voted for African Americans for office before. Hell, Jesse Jackson got 18% of the white vote in the NC primary in *1988!* Twenty years ago!
It's the *other* four million people that turn the state purple -- rural folk. Just like the rural folk in Indiana, or Missouri, or Kansas, or ...

28. NC isn' t like SC at ALL...and yet so many folks mix them up or put them together.. |
|
NC stole the NEW SOUTH from SC...and SC hasn't ever gotten over it..but check out NC through the nigh...it's a big state and is more similar to New York State where I lived for years than SC because of the Tourist/Research Triangle and Banking Industry. But like NYS it has the "Western and Mid-Half of State losing JOBS TO NAFTA! Furniture Manufacturing and Assembly, Agriculture (Smoking Legislation) and Texttiles to China and Indonesia...that cut out the "Roadside Outlets" all those Yankees stopped at on their trips to Florida down "I-95" for so many years where they stopped for "towel, pillow and bedding OUTLETS!" The OUTLETS ARE GONE!..DEAD...JOBS GONE.... It's much different these days...We gotta depend on "High Tech" and not Manufacturing...and yet those Manufacturing Jobs fed the SOUTH!
It's hard stuff and so many folks haven't been out of NC long enough not to be used by BANKERS in CHARLOTTE seeling them "Investment Portfolio's on why Globilzation is GOOD" and the "Research Triangle" which brings in Indian, Chinese and other "Graduate Students from OTHER COUNTRIES..rather than our own" to prop themselves up.
Oh..what a sad thing Globilization has done to our Kids.....who have bright minds but can't get money from US Government like those "Dissidents" we bring in from "other contries" to compete for jobs with our poor kids who can't get into Harvard, Yale, MIT, WHARTON and other schools because our Government pays more for FOREIGN STUDENTS than the IMMIGRANTS who get Green Cards and Supplementals to get great EDUCATION HERE...in our finest schools while "OUR KIDS" can't even get the Damned BASIC LOANS to get into COMMUNITY COLLEGES! It's disgusting...
