He's among the most trusted confidants of the clintons, and he's the one that they call on to put out fires (fireman-for those who read grisham) but from my judgement of him in public life, he's also a pragmatist, and he also recognizes the talent and potential for others, and the good it could do for the party at this point in time (he also hosted obama's first washington-based fund raiser for his 2004 senate campaign). I think he may still have both the trust of the clintons but also the common-sense to be able to broker a graceful resolution to this.

He must have approved of her divisive tactics so he has no influence IMO.
It's business as usual and he "appreoves this message."
