Clinton Surrogate Carol Simpson on Larry King: "White People will not vote for a black man"
Edited on Fri May-09-08 09:04 PM by Wolsh
Tell me again how this horseshit isn't bad for the party?

Edit: It may have been a combination of Lanny Davis and Clinton Surrogate Carol Simpson.

111. Primaries are not the General
Bradley won the primary in California and the polls had him winning big in the General. Bradley lost; hence the term :Bradley Effect.

163. Disagree. Obama is taking the right approach: refusing to rise to their anger-bait...
which frustrates them because they want the reaction so they can feed off it and get more free publicity...so when Obama doesn't respond, Clinton and her Bag-O-Loons ratchet up the anger-bait a notch or two. Obama doesn't react and feed their campaign fuel for more anger-baiting, so they ratchet up the anger-bait again.

What is happening is this: Hillary and her campaign are being given all the rope they need to hang themselves. They've already broken a promise to stop with the negative campaigning, and this will ruin their chances with the SDs and DNC. It also gives Hillary et al. plenty of time to discredit themselves to Hillary supporters. As Hillary gets more out-there, her supporters will slowly begin to think, "Say, perhaps she wouldn't make such a good president after all," and slowly back away from her, right towards Obama!

Obama is looking to the future and uniting the power so we can win in November. He's not getting bogged down in the past, and being "bogged down in the past" is really a metaphor for the Hillary campaign.

We can help Obama in his job to win over Hillary supporters by not ourselves rising to the anger-bait from Hillary supporters (who are understably disappointed and prone to pitch a fit or two), and keep our focus forward. Hillary et al. will drag us down with them if we let them.

Obama has realized this and is acting on it. Perhaps other Obama supporters will join me in joining him. We cannot afford to get bogged down in Hillary's anger and bitterness. Our country can't afford for us to get bogged down in Hillary's anger and bitterness.

I am "that demographic": older white female--and I voted for him in our caucus here in Kansas and I will vote for him in the GE. Of course, I do have 3 degrees, so I guess that makes me one of those "eggheads" Begala was talking about as being the only white people who would vote for Obama.

But I come from a working class family in Avoca, PA., right between Scranton and WIlkes-Barre, and Dad was a 22-year Air Force man. I think people like me are supposed to belong to Hillary, aren't we?

189. TRANSCRIPT FOR THOSE WHO OWE WOLSH AN APOLOGY >>>>
Edited on Sat May-10-08 06:07 AM by K Gardner
I sat here last night in disbelief and watched downthread poster call Wolsh and others of us who WATCHED this on TV.. liars. Screw you all. All you have at this point are digusting RW tactics, race-baiting, fear and calling people LIARS when you don't like hearing the truth.

(Not talking to you, hnmnf, just wanted to post this close to the top!)
**********************************************************************************
SIMPSON: Thank you.

I was going to make a comment about the white voters statement that is attributed to Hillary, but I decided I have a better point to make and I want to make it right now. And that is facts are facts, as Lanny talked about with the tracking polls and Hillary's comparison to McCain's numbers, if they were running against each other in a general election.

Do you know what my big fear is, is that Barack Obama is going to win the nomination and during the general election all of those white people that came out to vote for him in the primaries are going to get in that booth and are not going to vote for him, just like Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, when he was running for the governor of California. All the polls said that he was going to win and he lost by a large margin because people...

KING: Yes. What are you saying that America will not elect...

SIMPSON: ...said what was politically correct.

KING: You're saying America will not elect a black man?

Is that what you're saying?

SIMPSON: I am fearful of that. I am fearful that "God damn America" is going to pop into their heads as soon as they get into the polling booth.

MILLER: Sixty million people have voted for Barack Obama, most of them white.

KING: Lanny?

SIMPSON: (INAUDIBLE) primaries.

KING: Lanny...

SIMPSON: Now we're talking about the Gen.

DAVIS: I disagree with friend, Carole. I think America is ready to elect an African-American. I'm proud of what Barack Obama has accomplished and I'm proud of the way he's energized young people. I think he's benefited by being an African-American in many communities, including myself, who would love to have an African-American as president of the United States. I simply...

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Uh-oh, close to the race card.

DAVIS: I simply say I think that it's -- I'm proud of the fact that we could elect an African-American, Carole. I just don't think that Barack Obama is connecting with working class people. It's not about race. Jimmy Carter lost Reagan Democrats not because he was black, but because he couldn't speak to working class people.

KING: OK.

Congressman Rahm Emanuel says Barack is the presumptive nominee, Hillary can't win but something could happen that may lose Barack the nomination. That's like wishful thinking.

Doesn't it appear to you...

SIMPSON: Well, anything could happen.

KING: Doesn't it appear to you that if it looks like a duck and it acts like a duck and it walks like a duck, it's a duck?

Doesn't it appear to you that this campaign has now become a duck?

(LAUGHTER)

SIMPSON: No, because 40 years of reporting have shown me that anything can happen. Anything can happen.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Oh, your hope...

136. Correctemondo....I'll never vote for Obama. Hillary gets my write-in if she's not the nominee.
I'll not vote for someone I never even heard of 15 months ago....someone who doesn't make decisions...votes PRESENT 120 times so as to not have a voting track record....someone who's NEVER held a meeting for a committee he chairs (oversight of NATO /Afghanistan). I totally agree with Bartcop's perspective. www.attacktimeline.com to see the Rovian tactics of the obama campaign from the gitgo.

Hillary's the right candidate. Take it to the convention and fight for all your worth Hillary. The pundits and pollsters do NOT run or decide this election. If their not stopped in their tracks this time around...there's no hope for honest campaigns in the future.

176. How do you suppose Hillary will win with only 48% of the Democratic party?
Because trust me, if they steal, yes I said "steal", this nomination from the WINNER, then there will be hell to pay. She will have every Republican in the country at the polls before sunrise and nearly half the base will either stay at home, write in Obama, or vote McCain.

And they will have at least a justifiable reason for their gripes. Hillary's supporters don't have any justifiable reason to DEMAND that the LOSER be nominated. They are just a bunch of fucking whiners. Hillary ran a bastardized campaign and can't come to grips with the fact that she is, in fact, a total loser in this situation. She needs to come to grips with it and get behind our nominee.

The original post said Lanny Davis had something shocking. I said I doubted it.

I was absolutely right. Somebody else it, and I've since read the transcript, and she did not say it the way the OP claims. It wasn't her declaration. SHe was discussing the Bradley effect, which is real.

But nonetheless, I guessed that the OP would be a lie, and I was 100% right.

That's what Larry needs to ask Lanny. Make him say that he wouldn't vote for a black
man--and show his racism. Or admit that his theory is horse shit, and say that he would
vote for a black candidate.

This stuff makes me so sick. Race was never a topic--until Obama started winning.

Again, I say--they're being so grossly offensive, they must be deliberately trying to
ruin Obama.

They're punishing him because they think Obama stole Hillary's tiara.

144. no, no
it was said by Carol Simpson, a black woman who is a Clinton supporter (and from what I've read so far, a formerly respected newswoman). After her shocking statements, it was Lanny who said he absolutely disagreed with them.

I honest to god think this woman meant what she said. I can't figure out for the life of me what her motivation was. Offensive with a capital O.

I'm AA and I was so ashamed that she allowed Clinton to use her as a tool.
For Lanny to do it is one thing but for an African American woman to do that and smear her race is beyond anything I have seen yet on my television.

I am angry!

Just so angry!

How can the DNC allow this to continue?

HC is totally to blame for it and if this is what she wants to do to destroy all the good in this country, I'm finished.

219. The only thing I can think
is that maybe the only way the good in our country can be destroyed is if we let people do stuff like this without challenging them each and every time. If we don't speak up, speak out and give our anger a voice.

And I don't think we are that kind of country anymore, where we are afraid to speak our opinions. So maybe the only way to get rid of the last vestiges of this garbage is to let it keep coming out, so we can see what we need to fight? At least that is the only positive spin I can put on this abhorable thing which seems to be spewing out all over the place, by lots of people.

Hillary is simply not doing a thing to "lead" on this issue as it spirals out of control - she is using trash talk to get votes to further her personal ambitions. Fine, whatever, but I no more consider her to have leadership qualities than my pet rock of the 70s.

from the high 80s to mid 90s.

If that fact is rationalized as to be expected as some have said, i.e. black voters favoring a black candidate, why would it not also be expected for white voters to favor a white candidate?

I wish I knew how to remove race from the set of factors that will certainly influence the GE but I don't believe that will happen.

out the vote for Dem caucuses.

That augmented by the majority black vote for BO, 80-95% gave BO the lead however I believe HC holds the lead in primaries.

239. "White people DID vote for Obama. That's one reason he's in the Senate, right?" The point is some
who voted for Obama and Clinton in the primaries said race did matter.

For example, in Indiana, 16% of the voters answered "yes" to the question "Was Race of Candidate Important to You". 53% of them were Clinton voters and 47% were Obama voters.

See page 4 at http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/epolls/#INDEM

Another example, in North Carolina, 18% of the voters answered "yes" to the question "Was Race of Candidate Important to You". 35% of them were Clinton voters and 64% were Obama voters.

Edited on Sat May-10-08 02:54 PM by jody
IMO there are racists who will not vote for a black candidate and racists who will not vote for a white candidate.

I have no idea how many there are but the primary exit polls suggests perhaps 15% or so of the voters say race is important and that appears to be about even among Obama/Clinton voters.

That may suggest that among voters in the Dem primaries, there were about 6-7% white racists and 6-7% black racists or some other different explanation altogether.

ON EDIT ADD: I browsed a few of the exit polls since posting this reply.

Those who voted for Obama and say race is important appear to be a larger percentage than those who voted for Clinton and say race is important.

Are Clinton voters more egalitarian than Obama voters?

My post #21 started this branch of this thread.

It's a fact that some Obama voters said race was important and their percentage appears to be greater than Clinton voters who say race was important.

You say "the Clinton campaign is trumpeting the support they get from racists."

OK, I'll give you that point but please tell me why hasn't Obama acknowledged the support he got from racists in primaries that is clearly shown in exit polls?

In Illinois, 23% of the voters said yes to the question "Was Race of Candidate Important to You" and 72% of them were Obama voters. Their actions in voting for Obama based on race suggests racists motives and their numbers are nearly three times the probable racists that voted for Clinton.

There you have it folks, Obama has three times as many racist supporters in Illinois as Clinton.

And, disgusting as well.

Clinton alienated that voting block -- which votes in the same numbers for actual Democrats as the numbers that Obama is getting.

You may want to ponder why Clinton thinks that bragging about racist voters is something the Obama campaign would never do. And, you probably won't.

246. There is a difference between AA's voting for an AA because he's black
and a white person voting for a white person based on the fact that he's white.

I cannot believe anyone can't see that there is a huge difference between the two. Since George Washington, every single president has been a white male. For the first time in our country's history, there is a black male running for the office, and with a darn good chance of making it to at the very least the general election as the leader of one of the 2 major parties ticket. Of course that is going to greatly encourage the African American voting block! It is a representation they have NEVER had the opportunity to really have before now. There is a HUGE difference between someone who goes to the pole and votes for someone who is of their same demographic out of pride that there is finally someone on that ballot who is the first in centuries of their same demographic, and someone who has always had someone from their particular demographic on their ballot and goes to the poll specifically because they want to maintain their demographics dominance.

Yes, Senator Obama's being on the ballot has energized African American voters like no one's business, but to say that AA's who go to the ballot to vote for him are no different than Whites who may go to vote for a white against him for that particular reason are of the same cut.. bullshit.

I hope not, but it just seems to satisfy her campaigns needs, in too many ways.
A person of color (sorry I don't mean that as a bad way but only because I don't know her exact racial composition) says a statement like this but it can't be dismissed as racism because of the race of the speaker, but rather she can say she is being "realistic", remember Hillary's "Everyone Knows that" in response to a question from the reporter on whether her "hard working americans..." statement could be construed as sterotypical.

Hillary can renounce and reject this individual while also clarifying her own statement, which doesn't seem as bad in comparison.

Again I can't say for sure that this happended, but given my interpretation of the relative manipulating (in my view) tactics that I've seen from her campaign so far, I am highly skeptical

Apparently, the Psychic Friends Network have let the Clinton campaign know that all of the white people who voted for Obama would never, ever truly want to see a black man in the White House, so we'll all vote for a white man instead of Obama in November. Questions for the class:

1) How do they know this?
2) If true, wouldn't we also be afraid of voting for a woman?
3) If true, why did so many white men fall by the wayside during the primary season? It's not like we didn't have a "safe choice" back in February.

This is lower than whaleshit. I think Clinton make have just toasted her political career -- permanently.

Maybe it's because we're shucking and jiving with out imaginary black friend. We're losing ground with the hard working white folks because we can only win places where Jesse Jackson won.

This whole thing is just a fairy tale.

90. It's just an extremely unpleasant reality. Some
(who knows how many) will make their decision based on race.

I think in a last ditch effort to make her case to the superdelegates Hillary's surrogates have resorted to pointing out something many Dems would rather not think about or acknowledge - that Obama's race will be an issue in the campaign. And you are right. It isn't a slam against Obama. It's just reality.

207. That may be true
However, put yourself in someone else's shoes for a minute. What if Obama and Edwards and Biden and Dodd and Richardson and Kucinich ran their campaigns running around hinting at, or having surrogates outright saying that parts of American culture will never vote for a woman. No matter how qualified she is. How would you, as a Clinton supporter feel about that? How would Clinton react to that?

I hated the "iron my shirt" incident and the lame jokes about menopause. But it is a fact that some people feel that way about a woman President.

And I think that it is short-sighted and detrimental to either candidate's campaign to pretend that people that feel/think this way don't exist. And I think it's silly to kill the messenger for being the bearer of bad news!

Carole Simpson Says Black Person Can't Be Elected

http://www.maynardije.org/columns/dickprince/080430_prince/

Former ABC anchor Carole Simpson, a Hillary Clinton supporter, said on CNN's "Larry King Live" on Monday that Sen. Barack Obama could not be elected because he is black.

Carole Simpson
Simpson, who now teaches at Emerson College, made the comment in a conversation with professor and author Michael Eric Dyson and Flavia Colgan, columnist and editorial board member of the Philadelphia Daily News, both identified as Obama supporters.

The conversation went like this:

"SIMPSON: Thank you very much. What I want to say is how much things have changed. When this race started, Obama had all of the attention, rock star, Obama girl, everything, everybody was flocking to him. And now look at where we are. And I was asked on this program, should Hillary drop out and I said absolutely not. Anything could happen. And look at what has happened. We have a confluence now of race and religion, two hot political potatoes, and Obama stuck right in the middle of it.

"DYSON: Larry, can I say this? I think it's very important to say that Barack Obama himself has been brilliant in transcending these divisions, these bitter precincts of prejudice, and looking towards an America that he can unite. Even though he loves his pastor and distances himself from what he says that he finds , he calls on the American people to move beyond his paralyzing prejudices to unite as Americans. I think that's what we have to focus on.

"KING: We have about a minute. Flavia, do you fear that Obama may become this year's Dukakis?

COLGAN: Look, the proof in the pudding is in the eating of it. And I certainly respect the viewpoints of the American voter. So far they have obviously chosen Barack Obama, in terms of delegates. And throughout the country, he's running a 50-state strategy. But I will respect whatever decision they make. I think that it's patronizing to the American public to think that we haven't made — and this is where I disagree with Reverend Wright — that we haven't made enough progress as a nation that someone like Barack Obama will not become president simply because of the color of their skin. I do not believe that.

"SIMPSON: Oh, you better believe it.

"COLGAN: I'm sorry. You can have your opinion.

"SIMPSON: You better believe it.

"COLGAN: I do not believe, based on my experience, that that is the case."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quotation_mark

It is generally considered incorrect to use quotation marks for paraphrased speech where they may give the impression that the paraphrasing represents the actual words used.

Putting quotation marks around paraphrases is the kind of shit Newsmax pulls to fabricate quotes.

95. Here's a tinfoil hat theory for ya, my random thought of the day
Edited on Fri May-09-08 09:51 PM by frickaline
:tinfoilhat:

I find it hard to believe that there exists a person in this world that could not foresee that Hillary's recent racially-charged comments were completely self-destructive :nuke: for her campaign. And that includes Hillary herself. So why would she make these racially charged comments knowing that they would be received so poorly?

Knowing that she's a democrat and would therefore get no second chance at a presidential run, I began to wonder if she was "taking a dive" for some reason. Perhaps making comments of this nature would help to solidify and further motivate the Black vote. Perhaps it might cause White voters to question their own motivation for not voting for Obama.

Perhaps not, but I just find it so hard to believe that an educated, experience politician could think that these types of statement are helpful to her campaign in any way, regardless of her views on race.

Is it possible that this is where the 'paying off the Clinton debt' thing comes in? It just all seems a bit suspicious. Have we been played?

I think it was on CNN during the news portion. Olbermann showed part of Bubba's speech on his program as well.

It happened in West Virginia on Friday.

I'm hoping it will be on YouTube today.

177. Carol Simpson should be ashamed of herself

I am African American and I have no problem with African Americans supporting Hillary Clinton.

I am for Obama but Carol Simpson has a right to her opinion.

However, as an African American and a woman,if she believes that Hillary Clinton is running a fair campaign and she doesn't see one thing that is racist after all those comments -- that's sad.

When a White guest can say it's race baiting and you honestly can't see the forest for the greedy trees -- that's sad.

I wonder how she sleeps tonight.

221. So what does this comment mean - taken from the link you
posted?

SIMPSON: Do you know what my big fear is, is that Barack Obama is going to win the nomination and during the general election all of those white people that came out to vote for him in the primaries are going to get in that booth and are not going to vote for him, just like Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, when he was running for the governor of California.

KING: Lanny, do you buy that?

232. A black woman speaking the truth, but some of you obama folks
need to take off the damn rose colored glasses and realize we still have a long way to go before there is equality. If you do not believe it then explain why there is such a division between blacks and latino's?

It is sad but you can blame obama and his campaign for injecting race into this campaign first. Yes, that is truth too, but with the help of the whoremedia obama was able to carry this off, and Bill Clinton was the best friend Blacks have ever had in the White House, and Hillary can't even get 10% of Blacks to support her, but once again, we hrc folks are blamed for playing the race card if you mention that Blacks tend to vote for Blacks.

HRC said Obama called Indiana "the tie-breaker." Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, but she's using his mistakes against him. That's what you're supposed to do in a political campaign, but when HRC does it, some of you obama folk call it "playing the race card." I say Bullshit.....
