Poll question: For Obama supporters only: Is Sam Nunn an acceptable VP choice |
|
I have seen way too much of Sam Nunn recently to discount the notion that someone is pushing him for VP for Obama. In some respects I see the reasoning. But he is a bigot plain and simple. I am presuming that some Obama people read this site to get some idea of Democratic activist ideas. Please send a message.
Note: acceptable means exactly what it implies. You can live with it. Not your preferred choice, not the best choice, but acceptable. Note: Hillary supporters do not vote.

But he'd probably be a sensible choice for McCain...

Sam is loved in GA, but I am not sure that would be enough alone to flip the state unless Bob Barr is the libertarian candidate. That would siphon off enough North Atlanta Republicans to make GA interestersing and probably put it into play.
Losing Georgia would mean we win the election. I am just not sure why ypu would want Sam Nunn more tha Bob Graham who would put Florida in play,

27. some other icky stuff |
|
here's what wikipedia says:
During his tenure in the U.S. Senate, Senator Nunn served as chairman of the powerful U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services and the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. He also served on the Intelligence and Small Business Committees. His legislative achievements include the landmark Department of Defense Reorganization Act, drafted with the late Senator Barry Goldwater, and the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Program,<2> which provides assistance to Russia and the former Soviet republics for securing and destroying their excess nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. To date, the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction program has deactivated more than 5,900 nuclear warheads. He was supposedly a top choice to be Secretary of Defense or State in 1992 and 1996 and in a prospective Gore cabinet in 2000.
Overall, Nunn was a moderate-to-conservative Democrat<5> who often broke with his party on a host of social and economic issues. He strongly opposed the budget bill of 1993, which included provisions to raise taxes in order to reduce the deficit. He was also vehement in his opposition to President Bill Clinton's proposal to allow homosexuals to serve openly in the military.<6><7> He voted in favor of school prayer, capping punitive damage awards, amending the U.S. Constitution to require a balanced budget, and limiting death penalty appeals. On certain issues like abortion, the environment, gun control, and affirmative action, Nunn took a more moderate line. He consistently voted in favor of increased immigration.<8> One of his most controversial votes was his vote against the Gulf War. <9>
ok some of the stuff was good the antigulf war stuff and the securing loose nukes but the death penalty and environment and affirmative action crap oy vey!

40. If the Democratic party picks Obama I will support him....if Obama picks Nunn.... |
|
I will reluctantly support them. What matters to me more than anything else is who picks the next 4 justices to the supreme court, in other words, the next president. If Obama is my partys pick, I really don't give a shit who he wants as vp-one is about as good as another. Sam Nunn is a good man, far closer to me than any Republican. Do I want him as a leader? Hell no. Would he be better than Bush? Obviosuly....

41. Sen. Nunn is a very strong skeptic of American policy toward Iran and he is someone who very much |
|
understands the limitations of military power.
He has a sophisticated understanding of the Middle East and I would find him very much a pragmatist and realist on foreign policy; perhaps in an old-style conservative sort of way -- but this is a lot safer than the mad men of the neoconservative movement and their equivalents in the Democratic Party.
On social issues, well yes that's another matter.
