Latte hate
I have come to the conclusion that anyone who uses the term "latte" as a pejorative here is either:

a) A troll

b) An asshole

Or probably both.

I know, I know. The term "latte liberal" is meant to denote an ivory tower, overly-educated faux liberal who is out of touch with regular folk. Because god knows, we can all tell everything we need to know about a person's voting habits, personal stands on issues and sense of social justice based on what kind of coffee they drink and where they buy it.

If you use the term "latte liberal," you are either a freeper troll or an asshole, and you most certainly have an extremely ignorant, one-dimensional view of people.

It's too bad stupidity isn't painful.

I have legitimate sympathy for the mentally ill. Stupid people, on the other hand, can find sympathy in the dictionary between "shit" and "syphillis."

2. I don't agree with that. I live in Seattle
and the amount of money people spend on lattes is obscene. Not to mention that there are really people who freak out if they can't get one. One of my colleagues travelled to Europe with a fellow Seattlite and said the first thing the person did - in PARIS! - was look for a Starbucks!

Starbucks is all about cofee to go. Paris is about sitting and sipping for two hours.

26. Not to mention the sheer obnoxiousness of it.
I'll drink a latte occasionally, but I prefer to sit and sip it too, and I like it in a real cup. The amount of waste generated by lattes to go is frustrating.

We used to have a pot of flavored coffee every day - Irish Cream, Chocolate Almond, etc., which I really liked, but the people who work here insisted that we get a grind-the-bean-for-every-cup Starbucks machine instead, so they took away the flavored coffee. Too bad. I don't know why, but it just irks me to see that fancy machine up there, and the people who frequent it are - shall we say - pretentious.

35. Freshly ground beans just taste better
Like garlic that you chop and toss in the pan tastes better than the pre-chopped stuff out of the jar.

If there's a goofy beverage snob thing that bothers me more is wine snobbery. If you are ever forced to spend time talking with a wine person and you tell them that one you liked the most isn't the most expensive, expect to hear some jeering. My uncle is the worst. We went tasting somewhere and when I said that I liked the $20 bottle more than the $60 he chuckled. I'm like It's alcoholic grape juice, not that big of a deal. It's like being snobby just for the sake of being snobby.

but I honestly can't tell the difference in the coffee made with that machine from the old one. Plus I liked Irish Cream, which I guess is now considered a low taste.

The machine breaks down a lot too - then there is NO coffee!!!!!

45. I don't even think Starbucks is the best coffee chain
I live in San Francisco and there are plenty of Starbucks around. I think that their roast has a particularly burnt flavor to it that I'm not into. I always get a Starbucks card for Christmas from someone, so I will usually drink their coffee if I'm on the go and I need something and Starbucks is nearby. If I have time I'll stop at my favorite spot in my neighborhood, namely, Maxfield's House of Caffeine.

65. I wouldn't be embarrassed, I'd be pissed.
I've gone on vacations with others who wanted to spend the entire trip doing the same things I could do at home and that does annoy me. I don't fly thousands of miles to lay by a pool all day and eat as L'Applebees. I want to get out and see the sights, meet the people and experience things I can't elsewhere. That's why I always have a general plan of what I want to do and make sure others know I'll leave them to do my own thing if they start down that road.

I wasn't attacking you at all, Lisa, I just wanted to say that it's not my business what others do on vacation so long as it doesn't hurt others. :hi:

74. LOL, I didn't mean you.
It sounds as if you and I would enjoy vacations together. I always like to get the local flavor of things. Lots of small towns in the US have small charming coffee shops. I can't remember the name of the shop now, but there is an excellent one in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Their coffee is great and so is the atmosphere. But they didn't know what "tall" meant in coffee vernacular!

I used to work as a barista. You learn a lot about people by the coffee they drink and how they order it. My favorite story is about a FedEx worker who came in on a rainy morning and ordered a quadruple latte with whole milk! She was in a huge hurry. When we gave her the coffee, the shop owner said, "drive safely out there!" and she answered, "can't do it ma'am! FedEx". Beware the FedEx trucks with their quadruple-latte fuelled drivers!

even in SF it's maybe $3.50.

Also, judging other people that you don't know and how they spend their money is ridicuous. What if that same person makes enough money to be able to afford a seven dollar latte AND gives time and lots of money to a homeless shelter? Does that same person still deserve to be called some derogatory term? Plese don't tell me it's not derogatory - we all know it's intended as an insult.

100. Oh I see
There is politically correct hatred, and politically incorrect hatred then I guess?

This is an intentional use of a right wing phrase - "politically correct" - in the hope that we can stop knee-jerk reacting to right wing talking points and stop fearing them. If we had a serious program to tackle the actual substance of the right wing program with courage and vision, we wouldn't be so afraid of their talking points. We fear them because we have no response to them, we have no response to them because we are too cowardly or compromised to tackle the right wing program head on. Their talking points are taunting us to actually come out from hiding and do battle, but we always back down and refuse. They know we are weak, they know that we are not willing to stop them, that we are nothing but hot air, so they can use their talking points with impunity. Were we to actually go after them, their talking points would be of no use to them.

60. that is funny
The only time I see "latte liberal" here is when Obama supporters complain about other people, particularly Clinton supporters using it. Maybe someone is saying "latte liberal" around here - other than the people complaining about it - but it must be rare or the threads must sink fast.

Obviously, anyone who did say "latte liberal" is not talking literally about a person's coffee drinking habits, and I can't imagine anyone being offended or defending their personal coffee drinking habits. Your notion that people decide that a person is "an ivory tower, overly-educated faux liberal who is out of touch with regular folk" because they drink a particular kind of coffee is pretty silly. No one sees someone drinking a latte and then says "there is an ivory tower, overly-educated faux liberal who is out of touch with regular folk." Do you really believe that anyone does that? That idea is as silly, or sillier than it would be if anyone ever did do that.

I will say "latte liberal" is you like, and say that it means intellectual and educated liberals who think there shit doesn't stink, and who harbor enormous prejudice for and hatred toward people who are not "like minded" who don't "share their values." There, now you can rail against me. I am a socialist, by the way, not a freeper, not a troll, not stupid, not ignorant but quite possibly an asshole lol. I am not a Clinton supporter, either. And I always work diligently for the party's nominee and vote for the nominee in the general. Oh, and I don't drink latte. I prefer Cappuccino.

73. There have been a couple of those posts today and over the last couple of days
as the Oregon primary draws closer and it becomes necessary for supporters of a certain candidate to be dismissive of any candidate who would win there. As such, the term "latte liberal" has been thrown around with increasing frequency.

Once those voters hear the words "latte liberals" they will all go out and vote for McCain. The people so hate latte and anyone who would drink it.

Too bad we don't have anything of substance to worry about.

85. The people using the "latte liberal" term might as well be McCain voters.
"Latte" became shorthand for "liberal scum" back in 2004, in a charming Club For Growth ad against Howard Dean when he was the Democratic frontrunner. The ad implored him to take his (and I'm paraphrasing here) "latte-sipping, sushi-eating, belly button piercing, liberal freak show" back to Vermont where it belongs. If republican assclowns like Steve Moore want to say stupid shit, that's fine, but to hear Democrats parroting him four years later is a little disturbing. I don't see any difference between that and hearing Democrats in 2008 talking about the semen stain on Monica Lewinsky's dress, or hearing Democrats talk shit about Michelle Obama in the same way that Republicans used to talk shit about Hillary Clinton when Bill Clinton was first running for president.

I don't like it when Democrats adopt Republican talking points, however trivial and substance-less they may be.

97. I know the history of the phrase
I also know that the most successful right wing propaganda builds on perceptions that already existed, and that have some basis in objective reality, and I also know that nothing helps them more than when we take the "opposite position" to their idiotic talking points and accept battle on their terms and by their rules - as the people on this thread are clearly doing.

The effectiveness of propaganda such as "latte liberal" is a reflection of our pathetic and profound weakness, not of any great or brilliant work by the right wingers.

So we identify who "might as well be McCain voters" by whether or not they say "latte liberal."

I think you just made my point for me.

104. why?
Why do people "need to be called on their shit?" Who decides? Who does the calling? I do not think that right wing talking points are serious "shit" that we need to call people on. The pervasive influence of libertarian ideas, and the acceptance of the right wing definitions of the issues and the sides we are compelled to take, and the rules of engagement - regardless of the particular words used - among Democrats is the much bigger problem. There is a tremendous amount of resistance to anyone bringing that up, let alone "calling people on their shit" for that.

It may feel good to "call people on their shit" but as a political tactic, it is extremely ineffective and counter-productive.

I roast my own Fair Trade green coffee beans at home and grind them fresh.

I make the most astonishing latte's I've ever tasted and I'm a Seattle Coffee Nazi.

It costs me less than a dollar including milk for a quad shot latte'.

Starbucks actually tried to trademark the name "Ethiopia" and was being sued by the nation of Ethiopia to stop it. I don't know if that's been resolved but they don't use exclusively fair trade coffee... OR organic...

... and THAT, makes them transnationalist assholes.

Boycott Starbucks

besides... anyone that can pay five bucks a cup for coffee... then buys their brand name "Ethos" bottled water to "save the world," probably MERITS the term, "Latte' Liberal."

lmmfao
