Imagine if Obama had said "Whoever HE may be" when talkin' about the nominee. |
Yeah, Gerry Ferraro would be on every television screen screaming SEXISM.

5. "Whoever he or SHE may be"...that would've been a good line. |
And still would have received a large applause.

2. Hillary saying "whoever SHE may be" about the nominee |
seemed sexist as hell to me. Just say "they". That is what feminism is about, right? Gender-neutrality?

4. "they" would be grammatically incorrect however |
because of a silly rule about singular nouns and plural pronouns. And it's one of those grammar points that drives me crazy.

7. There's no need for any anaphoric mechanism there anyway, so who cares? |

8. I was told, in a long ago English class, that "they" was perfectly okay until the mid 19th century |
When some butthead grammarian imposed the universal "he" pronoun.
Don't know if it's true or not.

12. Too often "he" is the default. |
It's a subtle reinforcement of the idea that males are the default humans and females are the deviants.

13. Yeah but the two aren't comparable |
All politicians use the 'When I'am president/senator/governor/mayor I'll do this and this' to describe their platform. Its common and widely accepted political speech. To say that she'll keep going until there is a nominee whomever she may be, in the same speech where she is saying the party must unite is quite specifically saying 'my way or the highway'. Don't exuse her, because you know the two aren't the same.
