5. I'm betting he'll redact any info about "social" diseases, certainly.
He's acutually not releasing shit, IIRC. He's doing a "come in, you can LOOK, no pictures, no copies" thing.

Or so I thought.

Lincoln wasn't so bad. Neither was Ed Brooke. Hell, MLK was a Republican.

Lately, though, they've managed to make it a pretty dirty word.

I think, anyway. I am much more of a social liberal than he is--which is probably why I liked Brooke and Chaffee.

McCain cultivated that "maverick" thing because it worked out west.

66. Eisenhower wasn't so bad if I recall correctly
Here are some excerpts from his presidency:

Negotiating from military strength, he tried to reduce the strains of the Cold War. In 1953, the signing of a truce brought an armed peace along the border of South Korea.

In domestic policy the President pursued a middle course, continuing most of the New Deal and Fair Deal programs, emphasizing a balanced budget. As desegregation of schools began, he sent troops into Little Rock, Arkansas, to assure compliance with the orders of a Federal court; he also ordered the complete desegregation of the Armed Forces. "There must be no second class citizens in this country," he wrote.

Before he left office in January 1961, for his farm in Gettysburg, he urged the necessity of maintaining an adequate military strength, but cautioned that vast, long-continued military expenditures could breed potential dangers to our way of life. He concluded with a prayer for peace "in the goodness of time." Both themes remained timely and urgent when he died, after a long illness, on March 28, 1969.

IT means that Obama will get the full monty till the election and 'plan b' will only have to go through the 'vetting process' for the last several weeks or couple of months......

They'll be in just long enough to give the preachers time to get out the vote..

I dunno who that will be yet, but they HAVE to have a plan b....

McCain to release 400 pages of medical records
Fri May 23, 2008 1:04am EDT

By Steve Holland

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Republican John McCain will release 400 pages of medical records on Friday to try to put to rest lingering questions about his health and ability to handle the rigors of the presidency.

McCain will be 72 in August and the oldest American ever elected to a first presidential term if he wins the November election.

One source of concern about McCain for many Americans is his age, and McCain has sought to address any questions by pursuing a vigorous campaign, but until now has not released detailed information about his health.

He is doing so under tightly controlled circumstances on the Memorial Day holiday weekend. A small group of reporters will be allowed to study the documents for three hours at a hotel conference room near a branch of the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. They may take notes but cannot make copies.

unexpected reason - he was unable to accept the nomination and run in the general election?"

Now I agree that's really getting ahead of things - and it is certainly macabre if not sinister to hope for the worst of medical news for anyone. "Rejoice not when thine enemy stumbles." to use the Biblical proverb.

Still, I think it is fair to say that Sen. McCain was probably the only candidate the Republicans had running for the nomination that even has a chance to win.

His two greatest protagonist Huckabee and Romney would have been far, far easier candidates to beat.

Romney doesn't have a personality and he is Mormon. Nothing against Mormon's, the late Morris Udall was a Mormon - but Democrats and social liberals don't care and most didn't know or were not interested. But The right-wing Evangelical base would have a REALLY big problem with that. Huckabee would satisfy the same folks who would have a problem with voting for a Mormon. But he would be completely unacceptable to almost everyone else within the Republican Party. The former New York Mayor Mr. Guiliani is in spite of being a complete total foreign policy nut-case that would make Paul Wolfowitz look relatively sane, is still essentially pro-choice and at least somewhat pro-Gay rights. That would completely split the GOP.

I would really like it if Barack did not have to run against McCain (although I still think Barack would win). I think running against McCain is tougher for Dems. Mainly because Independents (and some Dems) like him. Yeah, we can tie him to Bush to a certain extent but he is a war hero and independents like him so it is a bit harder. I think it would be a landslide against any other Republican.

I don't know what Romney would have to say about that and I don't know how it would work. But I think they only last hope would be to bank on the "aw shucks" "charm" of the Huckster for a win.

Between the two, I'd rather have Romney, but I'd be happy to take either of them on.

McCain Talks Issues as Troubles Pile Up

(05-22) 16:03 PDT Union City - -- Facing a pile of controversial campaign troubles - including incendiary comments by televangelist John Hagee that forced him to reject Hagee's endorsement - Sen. John McCain tried mightily to shift the focus to economic issues and his Democratic opponent Barack Obama on Thursday during a California campaign swing.

McCain, speaking at a Silicon Valley forum on economic issues alongside Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, issued a renewed call for "comprehensive immigration reform" as a top agenda item for the next president. He called for a "temporary agricultural program," saying, "We need a way for an ordinary person to apply for citizenship in this country in a way that they can count on and trust."

Later, at an evening rally in Stockton, the Arizona senator and presumptive Republican presidential nominee launched into a slashing attack on Obama. He said the Illinois senator "doesn't have the knowledge, background or judgment to lead this country in these dangerous times," adding sarcastically that "for a young man with very little experience, (Obama) has done well."

Only a brief mention of his health records later in the story.
