the "i don't think she meant anything by it/gaffe" meme |
|
Edited on Sat May-24-08 10:34 AM by beezlebum
she meant it.i don't believe she meant she was "hoping" for it. but she definitely meant something. and you can not convince me that her "explanation" was what she meant.
yes, the kennedys have been on her mind- since january.
it was the FOURTH mention of it. it is a talking point.
she knew this would not go over well, but imnsho, she did what she intended to do:
it is a subliminal suggestion to super delegates that "just as with the last hope and change/sky will open up candidate, and as the first viable black candidate, obama might get assassinated, so (they'd) better back (HER)." in the same vein as "obama is black and can't win over the klan, so (they'd) better pick (HER)."
how many "mispeakings?" "tired-gaffeings?" how many? how many???? how many "suggestions" has she not meant? how many times has she lied unintentionally and yet repeatedly?
i am not overreacting. i am fed up. i am not kneejerking. the longer it goes on, the more justification and excusing i see, the more wrong she is.
this was not an innocent mistake. i refuse to pity her. i refuse to excuse her this time.

1. She is trying to sow fear and doubt in the Supderdelegates. |
|
IMO, she is saying to the supers, be careful. Obama is not durable or electable.

I don't think that Hillary |
|
was trying to use subliminal suggestions to encourage such an act.
I do think she used that word as part of her strategy -- kind of like her "as far as I know" remark -- to get people thinking 'what if?'. Gosh, what IF the unthinkable happened to Obama, we NEED Clinton around if something like that were to happen. Like that. The fact that she's cited RFK's assassination previously makes me think I'm right. Otherwise she could have just said "Both my husband and Bobby Kennedy took their campaigns into June..."
There was a reason she used that word. More than once.

in the context of what she said, your theory seems ridiculous to me. It seems clear to me exactly what she was talking about, that is, she was talking about races that went late.

6. Er... that's why we have LANGUAGE - to know what people mean... |
|
And it's as clear as day that she meant: one reason for her to stay in is because of the lesson learned from RFK being assassinated in June.
That's why language EXISTS.

"...one reason for her to stay in is because of the lesson learned from RFK being assassinated in June."
Would you mind if I borrowed those words? I've been trying to find them, but you did it perfectly well.

The word assassination, had no reason to be in the context of her statement. She could have just said. Robert Kennedy had also ran a campaign into June. That is all...the word assassination was not needed. Everyone knows what happened to RFK.

14. You've nailed it perfectly. |
|
This was no accident. She knew exactly what she was saying and meant to say it. She was just arrogant enough to think it wouldn't cause this kind of a shitstorm, especially since she's been able to get away with the same sentiments previously. The Clintons rarely, if ever, say anything publicly by "accident." There's always a calculation and purpose behind it.

Edited on Sat May-24-08 10:59 AM by Carolina
for her words, but even her alleged timeline argument is flawed. In 1968 and 1992, primary campaigns didn’t really get started until ~February. In fact in 1968, RFK didn’t announce until March much to the ire of those who felt he was undercutting Gene McCarthy who had won in New Hampshire and shown how weak LBJ was. That’s why LBJ announced, also in March, that he “would not seek nor would he accept the nomination of his party…” I remember it like it was yesterday since I worked on RFK's campaign and lived in DC.
And while CA may have put Bill officially over the top in June 1992, he had already essentially sown up the nomination in April.
Hillary is a liar and her words truly revealed her ugly and craven heart. There is no excuse or absolution for them.
edited to add: She is also not fit to serve in RFK's senate seat!

32. I'm not giving her the benefit of the doubt |
|
She is showing us who she is and I refuse to take her for granted. She knew exactly what she was saying as she had no problem repeating it over and over. Obama's bitter comment was a gaffe and people knew exactly what the man was saying. I only know of one time that he made such a comment but you couldn't tell the hillbots that who were pushing it for all it was worth on this board. What she said was no gaffe, she repeated that nonsense. She gets chance after chance to repeat such shit, could you imagine if Obama would of said such a thing about her? Oh hell the MSM would be talking about it all the way up to Nov and her supporters would of burned an effigy of him at the stake. The double standard an hypocrisy is astonishing and I cannot believe there are some on this board speculating that Axelrod will use this. I think they are smart enough to know not to touch her words as they do their own damage on their own. You see, that is the difference between Obama who has class and Hillary who has none. She jumped all over bitter gate using it to her advantage. Obama made one statement and left it at that and he had every right to make such statement since her words were so nasty.
I'm not going to let them tell me what I heard and what it meant. They can defend her till they are blue in the face but it is obvious that this is not sitting well with people. I'm sure come next week this will still be front and center.

33. Exactly...and remember She's a Lawyer... |
|
In the context of Obama, Clinton's words broke a double taboo, because since the beginning of his candidacy, some of Obama's supporters have feared that his race made him more of a target than other presidential hopefuls. Obama was placed under Secret Service protection early, a full year ago.
To be unaware that one's words tap into a monumental fear that exists in a portion of the electorate -- a fear that Obama's race could get him killed -- is an unusual mistake for a serious and highly disciplined presidential candidate.

34. i haven't really slowed down to |

really consider the scope of this whole thing.
i knew it was awful on a number of levels when i saw the first subjectline.
but it seems to just keep growing and growing in abhorrence- and here, you point out the fact that obama's security detail had already been beefed up early on, and she still sought to repeat this garbage- it amazes me that anyone is excusing it, or expecting others to just let it go.
at the very least, i would hope people would understand the anger over this. but i have to keep reminding myself that, as crankychatter pointed out, i'm sure it's largely operatives here rolling their eyes and telling everyone to "calm down."

35. Very sad that this isn't the first time she said it and esp. after the Huckster |
|
Huckabee made those grotesque comments so very recently at the NRA convention, she should have dropped that reference from her list. I'm still reeling from the Huckster's creepy remarks and would think she was too. That should have been enough to prompt her to drop that reference from her "June campaigns are okay" talking point list.
