and not so much the people. Believe it or not, state borders are political, virtual, not real, and there are idiots and geniuses, nice folks and evil folks, in every state.
So just as it's very unfair to put down people from NJ as backward and unsophisticated, so is it wrong and unkind to characterize Ohians.

24. Our Secretary of State is a Democrat, Jennifer Brunner. |
|
Edited on Mon Nov-03-08 12:30 AM by VolcanoJen
We booted Ken Blackwell in 2006, when he went for the brass ring and got whalloped in the gubernatorial by Ted Stickland, by a margin of TWENTY-FOUR POINTS.
I do so wish DUers, an informed bunch of people, could get their recent Ohio history straight. We are, after all, pretty electorally important if nothing else to people. So much has changed since 2004 and honestly the comparison is apples/oranges.
Thanks for defending us, though, NYC_SKP. You should feel even better that Jennifer Brunner is in charge now, she's increased the number of machines per precinct, instituted mandatory and detailed training for all poll workers statewide, defended voters against numerous and frivolous vote suppression lawsuits from the GOP over the last few weeks, and pushed for Early Vote more than anyone in the state. She's done absolutely everything we asked of her when we cast our ballots in 2006.

I'm glad we've got the right person in that office. The voting systems in so many states need improvement, it's really an embarrassment for our country and a disgrace to our democracy.

41. She did two other things too. |
|
1. Made Cuyahoga County a paper-ballot voting location by dumping our crappy voting machines.
2. Required every voting location in the state to have paper ballots for those who wish to vote on paper. Know what else that means? It no longer matters if there aren't enough machines or if machines break down...people can still vote on paper and don't have to wait in long lines.
All of this has been mentioned a brazillion times on DU, yet some still stand ready to call us a horrible backwards state with a horrible backwards voting system.

have a Democratic SOS. I believe that all of the votes will be counted correctly. Ohioans also have the option of voting on a paper ballot, which I did. We didn't have that option before.

Then don't insult the people of Ohio. You don't know what you're talking about to begin with, but trust me, we here in Ohio aren't much in the mood to lighten up until, say, November 5th.

If Ohio can elect a White man with a Black name (Sherrod Brown sounds like a basketball players name), they surely can elect a Black man with a funny name.

I really feel that Ohio is going blue this time around.
Not only did we put in Sherrod Brown and Jennifer Bruenner in '06 but we also put in our great Governor Strickland. Ohioans are starting to see what the Democrats can do for them. Strickland has turned around the way this state operates and has gotten a lot of props for it. People notice that.
I know there are a lot of people here that would never vote for Barack for one reason or another but this time we will deliver Ohio. The rally at the statehouse today was amazing; so many people, so much positive energy. To see the diversity in the masses of people and to see them all getting along and sharing stories is a thing of beauty.
Combine the energy and inspiration that Barack has brought with the fact that our Sec of State is all about fair elections and I see a blue Ohio. I even feel this way being the only one in my family not voting for McFailin. I'll just enjoy laughing and pointing at them at Thanksgiving, Obama button and all. :)

Educate yourself about the current political reality of my state, and realize this:
There has never been a Republican that lost Ohio and won the presidency. No other state in the Union represents a cross section of the electorate as well as Ohio does, and that is why so much time, effort, and treasure is spent here by both parties to win the vote.
Ohio will be blue.

51. A BIG F-U from an Ohioan! BTW it was us Ohioans who were out in the streets after '04 |
|
demanding a revote. It was us Ohioans who funded our own investigation, bringing John Conyers and the House Judiciary to the state to hold hearings about the fixed election. It was us Ohioans who attempted to prevent the seating of the Ohio electorate. Our investigations and loud voices lead many in this country to now realize we have a faux president, thanks to dirty tricks suppression, disenfranchisement and of course rigged voting machines.
So if you want to blame someone for allowing * to happen, blame someone else including yourself.
