I am pissed off. My daughter just came home from school - |
|
her "best friend" at school told her that Barack Obama hates children. When my daughter pointed out that Obama has two children of his own, the friend said, "He acts that way in public, but it's different at home."
When she told me this, I asked my daughter how this girl could claim to know what goes on in the Obama home. My daughter answered that this girl told her that Obama wants to kill babies.
Who THE FUCK teaches their children to say such things? Who THE FUCK thinks it's okay to use their children to push such heinous hate politics?

But around my way that shit isn't allowed. Except maybe some of the non-denominational. Plus my churches are in the inner city. They are actually very supportive of Obama if you talk to my pastors privately and NEVER bring up politics in church.

him back up again. This is not true Christianity, but rather a perverted extension of it. It happens in all religions and political idiologies.
Take a look at what USSR did with the teachings of Marx.
I think Jesus would be saying, "Forgive them father, for they know not what they do."

|
I don't know what schools you went to or know of. But that is NOT definitive of all Cahtolic schools. Actually if the Pope found out about that, those churches would be seriously reprimanded those actions. My Church doesn't play those games and I don't knwo of a Single school in NY that would do something like that as most of them even though they advocate abstinence (and hate anything outside of marriage), they do teach safe sex.

37. where did i say ALL. and no, i dont believe the pope would have issue. it has been going on |
|
for a long time. the more conservative catholic and baptist religions have serious issues. i take it for what it is and i dont try to dismiss, ignore or pretend it isnt happening in order to protect what i believe.
you were one in another thread that called a poster a liar, that you didnt believe that a child came to her daughter and told her obama murdered children. there was one other poster with you on the issue. of late, we have been seeing more and more of it brought out. it happened in 2004, (and that is when i turned away from religion, not god, not jesus but these religions) and it is happening again now.
as long as the devout continue to ignore the issue, not willing to challenge their own faiths, the problem will get worse
i am so pissed at the christian that points to others and say they are not. one of the reasons i have walked away from the republican and stand with the dems....

40. FYI, I never called her a liar but I did question if it was real. |
|
Further more, I felt she had a lot of nerve to assume that she should "reprimand", in effect, the other child. Which was not her right. Check out your sentence. You made no distinction in your statement. If you did I would never have bothered to respond to your statement.
I'm not protecting what I believe. Hell, I was deemed the Athiest in Catholic school. However, I will admit that I didn't realize there was entire 360 of the Catholic Church in the South. Basically the Church is very sterile in it's view points but gives leeways in certain things...such as Divorce and remarriage. Now I don't come from the perspective of the South. I'm definitely New York bred Catholic.
Okay, then you need to work out your own issues. I have nothing to say your problems with the Christian faith, nor do I subscribe to ALL Christian faiths, further more I know the Catholic one very well and those in area. Your issues come from your area and you should work that out on your own. I never walked to the Republican, thankfully. Indepenent and proud.

41. Aye...my statement was to make a distinction and that in NY that is not the case. |
|
Further more, this stuff is definitely debated and you can go to your archibishop and complain about what's going on. Priests are not supposed to do that. From my exprience in NY---they are very very very serious about adhering to separation of Church and State. They do not bring in any of this stuff and those pamphlets if passed out in my church would actually be removed quickly. This is not acceptable in NY and I've stated it as such.

72. There are conservative factions of the Catholic Church |
|
much as there are more radically orthodox factions of the Jewish faith. In the view of the Catholics, protestant religions are pretty much wacky spinoffs from the Church. So when these ultra conservative Churches do the same kind of wacky things, ---it really is nothing new. Bishops can also influence the parishes they serve. Catholic churches often reflect the parish they serve.
In the American Church, there is quite a spectrum, activist priests and nuns (like the Berrigan brothers), Catholic Charities, the Catholic Worker and similar organizations on one end and the Traditionalists on the other. Believe me some horrible crimes have been done in the name of the Catholic Church and showing disgusting pictures to young children is probably the least of them. These kids have parents who are allowing this.
Also, Catholics are not literalists. There is a dogma however, it is not taken in the same way that fundamentalist/born again/evangelical types cling to theirs. Most Catholics reconcile their sexuality with the Church's edicts-- and usually use birth control and lead satisfying sex lives and shrug off any shame that the Church may have associated with it. Being Catholic is a cultural experience besides a religious one. Most Catholics believe priest should be able to marry and women should be ordained. Every hundred years or so in modern times, the Church makes an adjustment. While we don't always carry with everything in the catechism, I think Catholics find their Church reassuring, it is like a rock. Granted the issue of pederest priests gave many a crisis in faith.
I am a crappy Catholic. I don't go to church -- I don't really care for the parish priest there. I might show up on Palm Sunday as Easter is too crazy. And frankly, I'm pretty unapologetic about it.

i am in religious belt of texas but grew up in calif. ALL my friends were catholics. i learned for a lot and appreciation for the catholic religion. and it was more what you and v are talking. it was liberal. the majority were strong dems.
things have changed.
and i am sad to see it. i want the old catholic back in all their imperfection
2004 the southern baptists and the catholics got together and aggressively went after their members to vote in a certain way. it made me mad. i didnt like seeing what it did in the christian community either, outside of catholic religion.
texas there are not a lot of catholics. two out of three of my friends are catholics and i married a catholic, (non practising, lol). about all there are in panhandle of texas.
i just do not like pretending, or saying this isnt happening cause if we dont call it out loud, challenge it, we can never address adn fix and heal it.

No doubt there.
What would you have people do?
I find that location is the most important factor, whether a person is in or out of church. Are people active in church merely to push a political agenda, or is it the other way around? Is the church dictating right wing politics, or are right wing demagogues trying to steer the church? I think a lot of Christianity has become a right wing political movement disguised as religion. Is it church doctrine invading our politics, or vicious right wing politics invading the religion?

And I went to Catholic elementary and high school. Sure they taught EXTREMELY negative teachings for pre-marital sex. But all my schools were very serious about pro-choice. We all had sex ed in 7th grade. So it's not "jesus" churches. It depends on where you were raised. Well on top of all that my mum extreme pro-choice as she's had abortions. So that could be one another thing.

|
I said, "Have you ever heard me say bad things about John McCain?" She said she had not. I said, "We don't promote Obama by telling nasty lies about McCain."
We have discussed with our children why we have chosen to vote for Barack Obama in terms of Obama being the best choice for the future of this country. We have not spoken negatively of McCain to our children, with the exception of saying things like, "We don't like his health care plan," and similar issue-related remarks.
I save my McCain invective for rants here at DU. I don't use my children to promote the politics of hate.

48. My tai chi instructor once said that "evil often overcomes good" |
|
I really rebelled against such a statement because, naive as I may be, that good eventually conquers evil. Now I am not so naive. The main reason that evil often overcomes good is because good has limits, boundaries, lies we will not cross. Evil will do anything to retain power. Lies, greed corruption etc are all within limits as long as they win.

What type of parent teaches their children such hateful lies? The type that lacks the capacity to teach their children the honest truth.
In time, your daughter's friend will benefit from their relationship, and see that President Obama does not hate children.

Said by children . . .
"If Obama is elected, he will take away our computers and TV."
Now that's some evil, fear mongering parents. I would have had to say something if I'd been there and just let it rip. Somebody needs to teach the children to stand up to fucking liars, even if they are your own parents.

Edited on Mon Nov-03-08 08:57 PM by socialdemocrat1981
Who sanctioned and was/is a major cheerleader for a war that has left children fatherless and parents mourning their children. I'm also going to bet that the parents of the child concerned also twice voted for a President who, while as Governor of Texas, used the death penalty as frequently as one uses cooking utensils and who once mocked a dying woman in an interview. And they don't see the hypocrisy in that
The parents in question should be ashamed that they are teaching their children such hatred and such nonsense
I'm sorry your daughter had to go through that

Not only was she spewing hatred, but she forced me to have to explain a very delicate topic to an EIGHT year old. Just sick...

Edited on Mon Nov-03-08 10:26 PM by antfarm
Our job is not to protect our children from exposure to all negative influences and viewpoints out there. Our job is to teach our children how to process them and respond. This is how she learns to be confident in her values and opinions.
If your daughter were always shielded from this stuff, she would never learn how to deal with it. If it were a teacher spouting this stuff, you would have reason to be outraged. However, coming across peers and others who spout ridiculous or harmful ideas is a part of life and something she must learn to manage, with your help. This is a teaching moment....you to your daughter, and perhaps eventually your daughter to her friend.

This is the same Catholic school I attended 1st-8th grades, and walked away with a wholly different understanding of Jesus' priorities. Many organized religions seem to have gone off the rails in the last 30 years.

...I'd tell them outright that their parents are stupid. I lived in the city, which kept me from being sheltered from current events. Plus there was always a newspaper and C-SPAN around the house. Heck, in the 6'th grade my entire class booed whenever the teacher mentioned John Engler's name. Everyone in Jackson, MI is pretty cocky that way.

people are actively using this exact and specific terminology to indoctrinate their children, whether it's parents or churches, or both. I heard that exact phrase, word for word - "Obama wants to kill babies" uttered out of the mouth of one of my daughters friends at my own kitchen table. After I closed my dropped jaw, I told her that was NOT true, and that sometimes people (even people we care about) will make bad stories up about other people in order to get their candidate elected. Are you in Texas too by any chance?

She came home with another unhappy story today. I posted it in response to someone else's thread, but I'll post it here too. This is a copy and past of an email I sent my mother a few minutes ago:
Jane came home from school today with an interesting story.
She said her teacher was reading them something that explained the symbols for the major political parties - the elephant for the Republicans and the donkey for the Democrats. She said the teacher paused in her reading to add, "Republicans are the strong ones, like the elephant, and Democrats are the weak ones, like the donkey."
Skeptical, I asked her if she was certain that's what was said. I asked her to repeat the story a couple of different times and different ways, and she remained convinced that this is what she heard.
She then asked, "Which presidential guy is the Republican and which one is the Democrat?"
She had no idea which was which, so I'm satisfied that the story she told me about her teacher was true. For all she knew, her parents were the "strong ones, like the elephant."
The question is, what do I do now? Conferences are on Thursday afternoon. Do I ask Jane's teacher how Jane managed to come home with the impression that her teacher believes Republicans are strong and Democrats are weak?

103. I just spent about 20 minutes debunking that same sort of "Obama |

Thanks DU.
