Today I stood along a busy road holding signs with ten 1st and 2nd graders. |
|
We were all holding "Honk If You Voted!" posters. It was such a beautiful experience - lots of honks and waves and huge smiles. And only one jerk yelled "Get a job, hippies!!" at us.
I think it's important to get kids interested and involved in elections and interest in government at an early age. We weren't campaigning for one candidate (though all the kids were Obama fans) - we just wanted to stress the importance of voting.

McCain.
My daughter told a different story, just one day after one of her classmates told her that Obama wants to kill babies. I'll copy the email I just sent my mother:
Jane came home from school today with an interesting story.
She said her teacher was reading them something that explained the symbols for the major political parties - the elephant for the Republicans and the donkey for the Democrats. She said the teacher paused in her reading to add, "Republicans are the strong ones, like the elephant, and Democrats are the weak ones, like the donkey."
Skeptical, I asked her if she was certain that's what was said. I asked her to repeat the story a couple of different times and different ways, and she remained convinced that this is what she heard.
She then asked, "Which presidential guy is the Republican and which one is the Democrat?"
She had no idea which was which, so I'm satisfied that the story she told me about her teacher was true. For all she knew, her parents were the "strong ones, like the elephant."
The question is, what do I do now? Conferences are on Thursday afternoon. Do I ask Jane's teacher how Jane managed to come home with the impression that her teacher believes Republicans are strong and Democrats are weak?

4. It was so fun to see them so excited. |

They were a little confused about why the mean guy was telling them to get a job, but all in all it was an amazing experience.
