Black DU'ers, I'd like to offer an extra special, extra sweet congratulations to all of you |
|
This is going to be fantastic for all Americans, but it's going to be extra wonderful for African Americans all across this country.
And it's about time. :)

17. Let us not use the color of skin to separate us even in celebration |
|
We need to go beyond it and support our half black/half white President Obama ~ Or do we not get beyond it now ?? We elected him together not separately and he will be working for all of us, representing all of us beyond these issues. I do not mean to offend.

35. sorry. you're wrong here. there was NOTHING wrong with the OP |
|
there is nothing wrong at all with the special pride and joy that African Americans feel today. If Hillary had won, women would have celebrated that barrier tumbling down. And Obama's identity is that of a black man, despite his mixed heritage.

This notion of "not seeing skin color" is frankly... a "white" american idea.
All food is "ethnic" in some way and that's a good thing.
We oughta see skin color and appreciate difference. Embrace it. Embrace diversity without embracing stereotypes.
Whites oughta stop seeing themselevs merely as white, too. They oughta think about their own roots, their own heritage and get beyond the whitewashing that we do in america. Be Irish-American. Be German-American. Be English-American.
Be montana-american!!!
Be gay-american. Be whatever-american. :)
But let's not think the goal is to be post-difference, post-race, post-history. That's not the right goal.

22. Afro-Caribbean American here. |
|
This is also not a win for African Americans...it's more than that. It's a win for minorities in general. Obama represents minorities in more ways than one. From himself Half African and Half indigent whites (a minority that faces abuses and oppressions without the same consideration), he also represents Asian minorities and Latino minorities and Native Americans. It was finally our cance to show that we're here. We're not invisible. We're not easily shut out. We're significant with the same chances and possbilites. We're no longer a basket case in need of hand outs. It's more now and that we share this nation with everyone.
God, we're blessed.

All the Black people I knew stood there and waited until they voted. They did not move. They wanted to vote at all costs, yesterday. This was especially the case for the older ones.
They all had a pride and a sense of dignity when they were casting their vote. It was glorious last night.
But, I thank everyone--from all walks of life--for coming together and fighting for Mr. Obama to be elected. I am tremendously moved to see the love, compassion and determination to fight for change in this country. That gives me hope that things are going to change for the better in many ways. :)

Look at all the "blue" states that DON'T have large AA populations - like Iowa, which launched Obama.
But fist bumps all around anyway

37. My dad always talks about how the people in his neighborhood |
|
would gather around a radio to root for black heroes of his day: Joe Louis, Jackie Robinson, etc. Growing up, we would check the back page of Jet magazine to see which blacks would be on tv that week to make sure we would not miss anyone. Today, I still become thoroughly excited when there is a black contestant on Jeopardy!, and we have viewing parties when the Williams sisters play. As a race, perhaps because we have been the underdog for so long, most of us revel in seeing blacks succeed in any arena.
While I view Obama's success as our success, it goes so much futher than that. Watching the diversity of the crowds he has drawn over the past 2 years, seeing the diversity of the volunteers manning his offices, it is much more than a black victory. It is a victory for all of us.
