ABOUT THAT MAGIC 60 NUMBER: For EIGHT YEARS Bush Rammed His Agenda Through Congress
And the Republicans Didn't even have CLOSE to the majority that we will have.

So why does the media insist this is important to Obama?

We're going to get 58, possibly 59. Can't we buy 1 or 2 Republican Senators?

Oh, and FUCK JOE LIEBERMAN.

2. That will only work with Judiciary appointments, not regular filibusters.

11. make them actually filibuster
Make them stand on the floor and talk and talk so the media will make it clear who is the reason they don't have health care etc.

5. It'll be suicide if the Republicans fillibuster everything.

7. The problem is you usually have Democrats who keep on defecting depending on the issue.
In the US system, party discipline is pretty lacking, especially compared to other countries like the UK or Spain.

So if we were getting 60 senate seats, the 60 number may be illusory in some respects beyond simply determining the make-up of senate committees. If you are talking about pieces of legislation such as the Employee Free-Choice Act, which I vehemently favor, there will probably be some Democrats who will jump ship.

10. who is likely to flip?
who is more moderate and can be swayed to vote with the dems? Obama has a mandate. Can we count on their constituents to pressure them into voting with Obama? This election has been a repudiation on ultra conservatism. It won't be smart for any of them to look like *. We need to use that. They should be a litte shy at first. They have been slapped pretty hard.

13. Agree. There isn't any need for a filibuster-proof majority.
Obama has a mandate. Republicans are chastened after their spree with Dubya. This is a good time for cooperation. I don't see Republicans trying to stand on their dogma.
