The only thing that one could not bear to hear, over the last few days, was the safety-first pundit mantra "too close to call".
That impossible verdict was the only result that one could not properly visualise. It was plain that this was not a margin-of-error election, or a split-the-difference poll result, but a historic event, or a "swing-state" event where all the commentary is monopolised by those who have a personal stake in muddying the waters.
It was, instead, a watershed event in which the Republican Party had to endure a considered "thumbs down" from the heartland of the country and the middle class of American society - the two areas which it had falsely claimed to own as its own property.
