That didn't take long, did it? Already we are blaming one group for preventing proigress for others.

Here.

At DU.

A certifiably progressive Democratic website.

It isn't nearly that simple. We are falling for RW media spin.

Let's keep our "media is corrupt/lazy/manipulative" caps on--now more than ever, folks. The story is never as simple as they want you to believe.

It hasn't even been 12 hours yet. Don't let them win.

Thanks,

Mom (I raised you better than that!)

2. African-Americans being responsible for the success of Prop 8.
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 11:46 AM by blondeatlast
70% of Whites voted for the measure--but we aren't hearing about that, are we?

4. Gotcha, thanks. I'm too happy to have that conversation. How could
anyone with a caring bone in their body vote for Prop. 8?

But I have a stepson and wife who are born again who refused to vote for Obama because of their pro-life stances. So I've got issues everywhere, ones that I will never get reconciled unless they fall out of love with that church.

Sigh. Battles everywhere.

But I'm too happy to have that conversation.

6. That was my point, fellow DUer. apparently nuance escapes you.
70% of Whites voted against it--a far more powerful voting bloc than AA.

But the media isn't telling us that, are they?

23. Where are you getting your numbers?
In two places on this thread you said that 70% of whites voted for it, and in this post you said 70% of whites voted against it. Neither number appears to be true. It looks like whites voted against it %52-48.

not enough reason and logic.

election questions.

How can someone vote for Obama and vote DOWN rights of gay folks!!

and I can truly say that I don't know ANY OF THEM that voted FOR that proposition, including a my best friend and her father a black baptist minister.

10. With 70% of Whites voting for it--it would be easier to spot a White who voted for it
than an AA who did. That's just the simple math, but the media just isn't mentioning that, are they?

Now is the time to move forward. African American Civil rights came from an enormous, seemingly endless struggle (that sure as hell isn't over by any means); no reason to believe anyone else's will be easy, either.

Yeah, it's like when gays were scapegoated for the 2004 loss.

The good news is it's a great way to identify trolls.

Hey, neighbor--I just found out I'll be moving to Cologne, Germany in March (still hoping to delay until the kid is out of school for summer).

I really want to meet the locals I haven't yet before I go. Interested in a meetup?

They funded TV commercials that were deceptive and preyed on fear.

19. Funny how we never seem to cast the blame on those that drafted the measures, fund it,
publicize it, and get the signatures to put it on the ballot.

It's always one group of Democrats who are responsible for the defeat of anything (even though it rarely is).

As an Arizonan who saw Proposition 102 pass after we defeated a similar prop in 2004 I share your belief in where the blame lies. Our Prop was defeated in 2004 because folks thought it would allow plural marriage; this year they specifically said "one man/one woman" and the Normons and fundies turned out in droves to vote for it--to McCain's delight.

Thanks for the sanity.

20. And we hesitate to talk about the churches who have such a hold
on segments of the population. Different churches, in different ways, bully and frighten their congregations. Just think about it. Mormons, Catholics, evangelicals, Baptists, and the list goes on and on. That's the root of the problem.

25. Thank you for this thread. I logged on to DU to celebrate
Obama and then I saw all the nasty threads trying to blame blacks and hispanics for Prop 8 passing. Blacks are 10% of Cali's electorate, hispanics, 19%... I'm not sure about the Asian percentage, but obviously the vast majority of the voters were white (even if the percentages were lopsided). Not to mention, similar bigoted ballot measures passed in AZ and AR, where blacks did not play a role at all.

I don't understand why some DUers feel the need to try to rile up hate and racial tension here of all places. It's just very disappointing but I see it time and time again around here so I wasn't going to bother to say anything.

28. Yup--that point glares at this Zonie who campaigned hard for Obama and against our
own Prop H8 (102).

I'm deep into a thread now started for no other reason than to spread the fallacy that African Americans and Latinos are responsible for Prop H8 passing and it makes me ill that I must on a progressive board.

Ccivil rights belong to all of us or they don't really belong to any of us. Two steps forward but a long, long way to go.
