Is Obama dropping his opposition to the Colombia Free Trade deal? |
|
Someone on FDL said they heard that on MSNBC...anyone hear anything? Why would he do that? I know he wants to help the auto workers, but unless the big 3 are going to go under before January, why make any deals to get Bush to sign something that he can sign himself after taking office? I've been saying give him some space and let him take office before jumping on every non-ideologically pure move he makes but I'd be really upset if this were true.

1. Bush might pass stimulus and auto bailouts if Obama gives in on The CFTA |
|
Obama probably would like to get the ball rolling as early as possible on the things he wants, so it's not put off until January. The sooner stimulus is passed, the better his chances of turning around the economic crisis. Action is needed ASAP, and that may mean he'll ne to compromise on a thing or two. That's just how it goes; you can't please everybody.

3. I guess, but compromising with Bush at this point doesn't make sense |
|
Unless these things really can't wait until January and Bush really can't be persuaded, which I find hard to believe. Does he really want his last legacy to be letting 3 million workers lose their jobs right before he left office?

it was reported last week that GM might only have enough cash on hand to operate through years end. http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-gm8-2008nov08,0,2808667.story

As much as I hate Bush, I can't imagine he would really let the entire auto industry collapse in his last days in office and have 3 million jobs lost. He doesn't want that on his legacy, and I don't think he'd actually let it happen.

7. Yes, because that would really tarnish the great legacy he's built up to this point. |

5. Considering that Presidents don't write laws, |
|
I'd hardly be concerned. The BS reporting going on now is ridiculous. The media is spinning the news like there is one branch of government. It's as if they want to create the impression that Obama has assumed the role of President of the Executive and Congress. It's absurd. AP actually wrote a piece quoting a Repub warning Obama not to become a dictator. It's clear where the RW talking points are headed.
Besides, Bush is in no position to negotiate from a position of strength. Obama takes over in about two months. Nothing that happens now is set in stone.

6. These Trade Deals have all but destroyed our Middle Class. |

40 Million job dislocations are in process along with the Financial Institutions Collapse. ---and we plan to continue in the same path.
Do not talk about creating jobs as we continuously outsource, and ship jobs overseas.

9. I was just asking if it was true |
|
I saw it on FDL but can't find any more info. I know that was what Bush wanted in exchange for help for the automakers...but I am trying to figure out if Obama and Congressional Democrats agreed to it...I really hope not.
