Inaugural Ball Watch: The People's Party
Bringing you the latest on inauguration celebrations.
Don’t think you’ll be able to score -- or afford -- a ticket to one of the fancy inaugural balls? Never fear. A number of grassroots groups are planning more affordable, less ostentatious parties for the masses
.
D.C. for Obama, a group of diverse activists that canvassed for Obama, is teaming up with a number of other local organizations to play host to a three-day celebration at the City Museum from Jan. 16, 17 and 18, said Kim Morton, the organization’s former president.
The details are still being worked out, but Morton said the Friday the 16th would likely be a happy hour, followed by the ball on Saturday the 17th, which would feature food and entertainment at a cost of about $100 per ticket. Sunday the 18th would be aimed at the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, Morton said.
“This is the people’s inauguration,” Morton said. “It’s for people who can’t afford the other balls, just for grassroots folks.”
