She's entitled to her opinion, but just because she has an outlet doesn't mean she needs to use it.

4. She needs to be educated, but I think she meant no harm. |

It should be brought to her attention so she will know better in the future.
Not to sound mean, but I doubt she is the sharpest tool in the shed.
I'm much more concerned with people who know to be politically correct but are secretly upset that an African American is President.

I think this can just be considered a gaffe on her part, rather than actually meaning anything by it.

Sounds like she just misspoke. She was thrilled about Obama. She meant person of color.
"Person of color" is a wonderfully acceptable phrase that signals the speaker's love of diversity. "Colored person" is the exact opposite.
Now she knows.

19. At least in the UK, I think it's probably the other way round. |
|
"Person of colour" is something I think most people here would only use if they were being deliberately mocking, whereas few people would take offence at "coloured".

18. I take it "coloured" is offensive in the US? |
|
Edited on Sat Nov-15-08 05:10 PM by Donald Ian Rankin
In the UK, I don't think many people would object to this, whereas anyone using "person of colour" - which several posters on this thread appear to approve of - probably would cause offense to quite a number of people.

who fell into the trap of giving words power way beyond their meaning. This is the end result of the tragedy which has become known as political correctness which they then tried to inflict on the rest of the world.
I'm surprised nobody from France, for example, responded. "Person of colour" and "coloured person" would translate the same into French other than "coloured person" would be an impossible construction - as far a I'm aware.
Yes you're right - coloured person is not regarded as being derogatory here. I have not taken a vote amongst the entire relevant community here but then I doubt that was done in the USA either. Just some whiteys deciding what would be best for others.
They seem to have the same issues with "orientals" which is once again acceptable here sometimes even being treated as a compliment to distinguish from Asians.

I think that there are more important people to pay attention to than Lindsay Lohan.
Really, who gives a damn what she says?
