Do you believe that there are still "ghetto" Cabinet posts?
I've heard some talk, most recently on "On the Contrary" on PBS yesterday, about this phenomenon: women/blacks/hispanics go into the "niches", HHS and Education being two singled out. I am not sure this is still a real concern. After all, Clinton appointed women to State and Justice, for example. And of course, Bush appointed Condi at State.

It was somewhat surprising to hear that even discussed...

1. HHS & Education might very well be historical spots, if things do change for the better
great topic, btw.

I read a post of yours yesterday referencing this.

2. My thinking exactly. Education wasn't a big issue this GE but it was for me.
And I think it will be more of an issue for Barack Obama than the past few presidents we've had; he's seen the effects of NCLB as a (gasp) "community organizer".

6. As Cabinet position, is S./Edu. capable of leading an effort to change how schools are funded?
No, I guess that's for each state.

It just seems so stupid to fund schools via property tax.

3. Yeah, that long thread was interesting and very eye-opening.
I was truly taken aback at some of the posts on that thread. I wonder what has happened to DU...

14. Definitively a sad thread. People seem to think that women and men are

equal these days. Unfortunately, it is a mentality I have met with young women also, who think that, because they can go to Yale or MIT, they will be able to progress the way than men in the higher ranks of businesses or politics. (I am speaking of women because it is the topic of the thread you link, but the same goes for the thread about AA).

4. No, I don't think there is a so-called "ghetto" cabinet post.
Transportation, for example, will be very important in this administration I believe especially with it's (hopefully) emphasize on energy.

7. That too, guess it depends on how much leverage POTUS gives each Dept and how much $
Congress gives it.

9. Education is not "ghetto" to Obama
And it should not be anyone else either. All this talk about repairing our economy, we are still screwed long term if we don't take steps now to reform education in this country. It's a global market now, and if we don't have the brain power to compete we will steadily lose our place.

Not fully clear on what HHS does, but if there is actually some movement on the Health Care issue (if we can afford it) I imagine it will be a very big deal.

10. all the dept are really linked to each other though, aren't they :-)
I agree about Education being a lynch pin but then went on to think that Technology and Internet tubes is a pretty piece of that...

it's all linked and hard to tease out where to start. What can get cut, put off, tailored.

11. that is a very offensive term...

although I think there are some posts that seem to attract payback-type favors... with folks who don't really seem qualified.

I used to think that Labor looked that way, until Clinton appointed Robert Reich, whom is so cool.

13. Which is why I put quotes around the word.
I'm not sure whether that word was used in the show yesterday or I was trying to be creative...

IT's probably a throwback to earlier days.
