Hillary would make a good SoS, but I wish she weren't the choice for one reason |
|
Edited on Sat Nov-22-08 08:53 AM by HamdenRice
Clinton fatigue.
This issue came up when Clinton was being considered as Vice President as well. I realize that it is not about the nuts and bolts of foreign policy or the chain of command.
It's simply that the Clintons seem perpetually to create drama. It's perplexing, but it's a simple fact. Look at the vetting process and compare it to any other Obama appointment so far: we've had the "will Bill release the library donors" drama; we've had the "she really doesn't want the job, but wants to forestall Richardson and Kerry" drama; we've had the "Hillary's people leaked her potential appointment to force Obama's hand" drama; we've had the "was this payback for releasing the delegates" drama; and this is only what week one of her possible appointment?
This is not necessarily Hillary's fault. Bill is much more the drama king than Hillary -- always was and always will be -- but they come as a package. It's also the fault of the Friends of Bill who seem unable to actually help their friends -- the Carville's, the Snophonopoulous's, and so on.
With Hillary as SoS, there is going to be Clinton drama at least one or two times per week for the next four years.
Are you really up for that?

She detracts from Obama's message. I think he will come to regret this. Sad.

2. Well, I wasn't. But now, I think this could work, if Biden and Jones and Obama run the show. |
|
Brezhinski said that he THOUGHT the way it might work is that Obama uses Biden and Jones extensively to formulate policy, and Clinton is the person who executes it. After all, she doesn't have a background in formulating or analyzing foreign policy.
I think it could work. Yes, there will be leaks, and there IS Clinton fatigue. But she IS unique in her global fame, global respect, relationships with foreign leaders, which may outweigh the drama.
It could work.

5. For the umpteenth time: the Clintons are not the ones creating the "drama." |
|
The drama comes from the people who cannot seem to stop talking about them. People create the hyperbolic bullshit themselves, and then sit around and complain because there's so much "Clinton drama!" Well of COURSE there is! The AMUP nuts won't let the woman breathe without finding a way to spin it as some Evil Clinton Plot. For every Clinton-worshiping PUMA, there's an equally-irrational, equally-pathetic Clinton-loathing AMUP. Same breed, different markings.
If everybody wants the drama to stop, well then, that's an easy thing to accomplish. Take a long hard look in the mirror, and stop being effing DRAMATIC.

It's not a "happy" pick for me, but it's his choice so I'm fine with it.
I still think there's a chance it may fall through. I fear hillary will take the advice of bill over Obama and that has me a little worried. I think bill hand picked her campaign staff and he, himself was her main adviser, and we all saw how well that worked out.
Whoever is chosen, I am hoping that they will address the problems in the congo and the sudan immediately. Nearly a million people died in Rwanda under the clinton admin and that many more have been slaughtered in Darfur and The Congo so far under the bush* admin in the last eight years. Not to mention the Iraqi death toll you can tag on to his body count while in office. It's quite staggering when you think about it.
I would also like to see relations in Cuba improved and the Palestinian people's suffering alleviated. Many fences to mend, many wrongs to be righted. I just hope whoever he selects is up to the task.

11. No, the media has nothing else yet to chomp on. Bush sucks. The scheme |
|
called capitalism is dying. The Clinton's are always fun to chomp on. Perhaps that's why Obama wants her out of the country... nah. She'll be fine.. other countries do like her and Bill. They will do good on the Positive Image for America, and she will do as she is told to do... I'm sure her input will be valuable, but at the end of the day its an Obama decision. The media love to hate them, and they do their best to make us hate them, and we don't... AND coming off a disaster like Bush, Clinton was like heaven as a President.

36. "Not in play" would imply that there was no chance. |
|
There was obviously a good chance as long as we worked for it. I never claimed Georgia had a chance. I know that Georgia and NC are two totally different places.
I was very confident NC would come through as long as there was enough work put into this state. I think, as we continue to build, we will be able to go blue for Obama in 2012 as well. We just have to work really hard to do it. :)

14. Obama has used Clinton "drama" to suit his own purposes |
|
The Clinton drama in the lead up to the convention served Obama and Democrats very well by focusing attention on it and when everyone was watching Hillary did what many did not give her enough credit to do.
The Clinton drama now is giving the media something to talk about while Obama formulates the rest of his staff/cabinet and plans for the economic nightmare we are going through.

|
Regardless of who is creating the drama -- Bill, Hillary, their friends, the media -- why would it be any more or less if she is SOS or a Senator? Bill would still be the former President. Carville would still be on television. She'd be on the public stage regardless.

23. It wouldn't be part of the Obama administration |
|
Edited on Sat Nov-22-08 10:55 AM by HamdenRice
That's the difference. Clinton drama is a distraction from the person who presumably should be the focus of the administration -- the president.
Moreover, Clinton drama has in the past actually prevented things from getting done. As a Senator, Clinton drama would affect principally the office of New York Senator Hillary Clinton. As SoS, Clinton drama could affect the Obama administration and the foreign policy of the United States of America.
If she stays in the Senate, for the first time in 16 years, Clinton drama would not be part of a presidential administration or a presidential run, sort of like her first year or so in the Senate, when she was just the Junior Senator from New York, and we had a bit of a break.

no matter WHAT, media is a problem until we make it NOT a problem anymore
we got him in... he's swimming in filthy water filled with snakes
I want an end to neoliberalism... but for not ONE second did I think he'd wave a wand and make that happen
in fact... it's a flimsy reed. He talks about it... he didn't take their money in the same way and to the same degree most do....
maybe he'll be our guy up there in that debauched, powermad environment
but it's only a maybe
what did people expect? jeezus
no free media, no public campaign financing, no instant runoff voting, and a military industrial complex so deeply entrenched, that many believe they killed JFK and have been running the whole dog and pony show for 45 years
mmmm.... ya think?

She wasn't even named to the short list when it came out. Even with her lack of qualifications, how did she jump to the top of the list? And now the campaign finance brouhaha at the FEC? It's just too much.
