Chris Matthews Staffing Up for Probable Senate Run in 2010

Chris Matthews, it appears, is in.

FiveThirtyEight has been hearing for some time that Matthews is serious about running for the United States Senate, but it took a trip to Georgia among the Georgia-runoff-congregated and well-connected Obama organizer throng to confirm.

According to multiple sources, who confirmed the Tip O'Neill staffer-cum-MSNBC host has negotiated with veteran Obama staffers to enlist in his campaign, Chris Matthews is likely to run for United States Senate in Pennsylvania in 2010. Matthews, 62, would run as a Democrat. Arlen Specter, the aging Republican incumbent, will be 80 if he chooses to run for re-election.

Preliminary public polling suggests Matthews would start at a deficit, in part because Matthews' name recognition is lower than Specter's.

2. Tweety as a Dem? Perhaps a conservative DLCer.
I don't know how I feel about this. Tweety has always struck me as the type that follows what the prevailing winds bring. He was strong * supporter when repukes had more support and now he wants to run as a Dem now that the Dems are firmely in control. It could be worse though.

16. YEP, finger to the wind as someone else said ...
He is a finger to the wind guy, his biggest talent, frankly.

I for one will work against him in the primary if he has some much as a township supervisor running against him. Democrat or not, he bunghole sucked this president and Rs for the first 7 years of this decade before taking a hard turn left when he knew it was going to be sure fire dem win.

I WILL NOT forgive him for going his part as a media whore in demonizing and marginalizing Ds when he was worried about his media career.

He wins the primary, which he will, I will set it out after that.

11. I disagree. He obviously loves politics and seems to speak his mind. He turned against the war
when it was discovered there were no al Qaeda/WMD in Iraq. He was all over the CIA leak investigation, saying he thought Rove, Libby, and Cheney lied. He's been a vocal opponent of the war before the Dems. were in power. I hope he runs and wins.

5. he has my support
I think Matthews is an old-school democrat. A blue-collar liberal.

What he said right after 911 and the runup to the war I attribute more to the quest for ratings than his true beliefs.

13. I attribute a lot of what he said after 9/ll as love for his country
Edited on Fri Nov-28-08 03:19 PM by fed_up_mother
Whether I agree with Matthews or not, he's one of the few people who truly loves this country "and" wears that love on his sleeve for everyone to see. After 9/ll I thought he was having a love fest with Bush, but really - upon examination - I think he was expressing his love for our country, and did so by supporting Bush. I think he highly regrets that, now. I have some concerns about his judgment, sometimes, but I can't imagine someone who would love to get in there and work for his country more than Matthews. The way he loves his country and he loves politics is different from most others who seem to be more fascinated with politics for power's sake.

Reading what I wrote, it seems kind of corny, but then Chris Matthews is a "corny" kind of guy! LOL

I mean, here we have a guy who has been bloviating into a microphone for how long, 10, 20 years? It's not going to take long for opp research to make him look like a fool by going through the tapes. Especially with his tendency to gush over anyone who makes a good political move.

14. I'll take a look at his stand on the issues...and take it from there.
Arlen Specter has done nothing but kiss George W. Bush's ass for the last 8 years, and I will NEVER forget the role he played in the Anita Hill hearings, that time kissing Poppy Bush's ass.

I wish Sen. Specter good health, but I would love to see him replaced in the Senate. Does Chris Mathews fit the bill? Time will tell, but I'm willing to hear him out.

He should blow out the competition during the primary. His star power as well as his Capitol Hill/White House experience should
hold him in good stead in the GE. I doubt there will be a bruising primary as the DSCC is not going to want one, so Gov. Rendell
and Mayor Nutter as well as the PA DEmocratic Party will make it clear who has their collective backing.
