17. You listen to someone for a year and get an impression of them. |
|
Obama strikes me a very bright by political standards but politics doesn't attract intellectual freaks. Every politician has people on staff who are a lot smarter, but lacking other qualities.
The smartest people in the world are likelier to be hiding in their parent's basement than sitting in the oval office.
Obama is brilliant by presidential standards, as were Clinton and Carter.
But I know people considerably brighter than that. Doesn't mean they should be president.
Maybe Obama is much smarter than I am so it shouldn't be about me... let me rephrase: it's a certainty that there are people on DU smarter than any successful politician, Obama included.
Doesn't mean they should be president.
Smart is a VERY limited commodity.

5. I honestly have no idea. |
|
Edited on Fri Jan-09-09 01:13 PM by Occam Bandage
There are so many things that go into the perception of intelligence that I can't really answer that. I'm pretty sure I can process certain types of information more quickly than he can, but I wouldn't put money on that. At the same time, I think I lack a certain depth and intellectual moderation that he has, I'm nowhere near as capable of expressing myself as he is, and I certainly don't have the drive he does. And I absolutely do not have the breadth of information to draw upon that he does.
On the whole, I'd guess I'd have to say "It depends on how you define intelligence, under the most favorable definitions maybe, but overall probably not."

9. You ask the wrong question, it should be do you think you are more well read/more informed than... |
|
Obama. Intelligence itself is rather subjective, even the so called IQ test is as well, however, being well read can at least be somewhat identifiable with what his stated positions are or what he's said publicly that we can access.

Are you smarter than Karl Rove? who has a piece of crap where his heart should be - or - George Will? who has a cinder for a heart.

Possibly many of us are "smarter" than Obama . . . whatever that means?
Are Americans smart about really stupid things?
Looks like it to me!
I think EGO plays a large role in this ---
and setting a precedent for an AA I think is important for the country.
Did I vote for a "black" man -- NO. I voted for a Democratic Party to be in leadership
and for a liberal/progressive/populist agenda.

19. Does it matter how smart Obama is, or what he does with it? |
|
Poppy Bush is a smart guy. He wouldn't have been able to get away with everything he has for the last 50 years if he wasn't. But that didn't make him a good President.
I'm a smart guy. Obama's a smart guy. Which one of us has a higher IQ? Damned if I know, or really care. He's not a moron like Chimpy, and that's good. But that doesn't ensure that his administration will be a 180 degree difference from Chimpy's. The people he surrounds himself with DO. And it's those people who will be influencing his decisions. They may not make decisions FOR him, like Chimpy's people more than likely did. But his information will come through those "filters".

I never would have even considered running for the office of POTUS after what Bush has done to it the last 8 years. Then, again, if he's successful, as I'm sure he will be, he will make such an impression on the electorate, they will never let him leave office.
I hope he shows George how it's done. Go, Obama!

If I was in a room alone with Obama, I might be able to score a few points on him if we debate scientific issues, but he'd probably mop the floor with me on Constitutional issues and various political topics.

Smart is a lot of things. There's IQ, there's knowledge, and there is wisdom that comes from experience.
All that said, I'm sure I'm "smarter" than Obama in several areas of knowledge, and probably IQ, but I don't know nuttin' about presidentin'! I wouldn't trust myself as far as I could throw me!
