Just Watched The Swearing In Again. Didn't Realize They Both Messed Up! (I Think) |
|
Edited on Tue Jan-20-09 07:05 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
I kept hearing about Roberts messing up and from reading DU thought that Obama then paused, waited for it to be said correctly, and then finally repeated it back.
Upon watching it again (just to watch it again, not for that reason), that does seem to be the case as far as why he paused (since Roberts messed it up), but then when Roberts stated it correctly Obama then repeated it the way Roberts said it the FIRST time, not the second (Obama still said faithfully last).
So I'm curious: Do you think Obama had a quick lapse as well (stumbled and accidentally repeated the flawed verse) or do you think out of respect rather than act smug as if he had to correct him, he chose to say it the flawed way in order to not seem petty? I'm not sure to be honest. I thought he ended up saying it the right way but he didn't.

I think he didn't want to embarrass Roberts any further by having to verbally correct him on the podium.

Obama caught the mistake, but let it roll, even when Roberts said it wrong again, Obama just said it so as not to point to the fact that Roberts is a dick... erm... that Roberts fucked up.

I've read various opinions all over the internet, some accusing Roberts of intentionally trying to mess up the swearing in, others accusing Obama of being smug and so on. Just my opinion but I don't think either one of them had any ulterior motives, either good or bad. Just nervousness.

Obama KNEW the oath. Roberts didn't. Obama paused, nodded at Roberts, let him recover and start again. Roberts still screwed it up. Obama gave the proper oath as well as he could given Roberts' eff up.

Not sure if Obama did it intentionally or not (hence the OP), but what he repeated was the wrong version, not the right version. You might want to get your facts straight prior to replying so matter of factly.

I've watched that scene at least a dozen times since it went down live. Did you bother reading what was actually supposed to be said? If you had, you would understand the look Obama gave Roberts, and you will understand why he said what he said. Roberts has since apologized for his fuck up. I don't expect that sort of thing from you, though, no worries.

You then need to realize there was a question pertaining to it, and wondering what others perceptions were since the determination as to whether it was or wasn't repeated in error can ONLY be one of opinion.
You stating it as blunt fact is a sign of either your complete misunderstanding of the example in the OP, or just flat out ignorance. :hi:

|
but that was partly Roberts' fault. Obama began reciting his name before Roberts could say "do solemnly swear." It was supposed to be one phrase, but Barack thought there would be a pause between the two. When looking at past swearing-in's, however, it's clear that they usually do it in one phrase. "I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear" rather than "I, Barack Hussein Obama"........"Do solemnly swear." The whole moment was awkward, but I think it was a blessing in disguise. As Clio pointed out on here earlier today, we got some WONDERFUL pictures of them smiling because they were embarrassed and laughing at themselves. Barack flashed that billion watt smile, which was pretty cool to see. :)

My surprise came when I heard Obama recite the wrong phrase back instead of the corrected right one. I had been under the impression all day that after Obama paused and Roberts repeated it correctly, that Obama then recited back the correct version. I didn't realize till later that Obama repeated the wrong version as well (with faithfully coming last).

Obama is a much bigger man than you give him credit for. Clearly he didn't want to make too big a deal out of this.
Unless you're a Freeper who will claim that Obama isn't president because this wasn't recited verbatim, then you should let it go. Everyone should just let it go. Take the high road... for once.

It was just a simple question on what people's opinions were as to why he repeated back the wrong version.
Furthermore, your statement that Obama is a much bigger man that I give him credit for makes zero sense. One would have to wonder what kind of skewed mindset was in place that created such a flawed and illogical statement.

Obama thought Roberts was going to stop after "I, Barrack Hussein Obama" and stepped on the next line. Then he repeated it.
Then Roberts left out "faithfully" and Obama waited for him to correct it.
Then he added "faithfully" in the wrong place.
And Obama just said "Fuck it" and said it how Roberts said it.
It seemed like one of those Olympic gymnastic routines where someone falls and just finishes whatever they have left.
What probably should have happened is this: Roberts apologizes and begins the oath again. But they both had that "What do we do now?" look and plowed ahead.
