Sexism strikes again
This is an outrageous decision by Governor Patterson. We all know what's going on here. Governor Patterson told Mrs. Kennedy-Schlossberg that he was not going to pick her but because of her and her family's service to the nation, Patterson allowed her to "withdraw" as a face-saving measure. He probably told her late last night/early today that she was't getting it. That's how these things work. Barbara Walters fired Rosie O'Donnell but allowed O'Donnell to "quit" the show.

I remember during the primaries that I was such an avid supporter of our new president that I ignored and dismissed the accusations of sexism against Secretary Clinton. This whole experience with Caroline has opened my eyes. The old-boys network is in full swing protecting it's own ensuring that the glass ceiling remains.

Look at the media treatment of Caroline in the New York media. Horribly sexist. Horribly mean. Degrading. Crticizing her for her verbal expressions such as "you know."

We've seen rampant sexism 3 times this year. First, with the criticism of Hillary in the media for what she wore, how she was overly assertive, her persona. Indeed, we saw it since 1991. Then, even though I hated her because of her ideology, we saw it with Sarah Palin. Now we see it again with Caroline. We saw it with Mosely-Braun and Elizabeth Dole as well.

One civil rights struggle took a huge leap foward yesterday. Another civil rights struggle remains.

If Caroline had been male, she would have gotten the senate seat.

One would think that Governor Patterson would have welcomed the chance to break the glass ceiling. I guess not. The senate will remain an old boys club I guess (which is the way that they want it)

Outrageous. Letting her twist in the wind for 2 months. Even more outrageous!

10. That's a huge assumption to make based on no real evidence.
Maybe she changed her mind and decided she didn't want the job after all. Maybe she was concerned about Teddy. Let's not holler about sexism unless and until we know there's a solid reason for it.

13. Let's see how this is pieced together by the media
What led to the decision to withdraw, the "tick-tock" so to speak, the inside story that the national and state media is able to glean. If the facts after reporting by the media still bear the official explanation out, I'll back down. Until then, no. Do you really think that she would have withdrawn if she was likely to have been given it? Teddy's condition is reported by all to be stable and he was released from the hospital today. It's hard to imagine that his condition could have led so suddenly to this.

I wanted Caroline for this seat; so you'll forgive me if I'm upset.

19. Doubtful that Teddy would want to stand in the way of her career
Even if she was overly worried about her uncle, I doubt if she'd withdraw for that reason, or if he'd even want her to.

Sorry you're upset that she didn't get the seat. I'm not from NY, so I don't know enough about her or the politics to form an opinion about her. But I do agree that if she were a man with her family name and fundraising connections, she would have gotten the seat. Not sure if sexism is why she's NOT getting it though. There could be other issues at play, other politicians who feel like they are more "in line" for the seat. That's why they call it politics.

I'm sure we'll see more of Caroline.

views as a father.

2. There are other (highly qualified) women Governor Paterson can appoint, so can you explain where sexism is occurring here again?

17. There are other qualified women, true enough, but we all know
they are not contenders. I'll give Paterson the benefit of the doubt, although the 'good ole boys' club theory is more plausible.

24. How do we know that? Unless "we" have inside information into Paterson's brain,
I don't think anyone knows that these people are not contenders. Such a statement COULD be considered as very sexist, dismissing these possibles outright.

I don't know what Paterson is thinking, but the more I hear him talk the more I like him and trust him to do what he thinks is in the best interest of the people and New York and the Senate seat that he is required to fill to represent them.

18. Oh, come on!
I have been on record as complaining about sexism against Clinton and Palin.

Big differences: both of these women (and Mosely-Braun, and Dole) have been in the public eye. They campaigned, they met people of all walks of life, they shook hands, ate rubber chicken, kissed babies, endured nasty campaign ads and participated in debates. They were open books when they ran.

Kennedy lived a sheltered life. Her supposedly involvement in charity causes were a matter of selecting the one that she preferred, from all the requests that came her way.

And all of a sudden she wants to be a senator?

Let her campaign, let her meet people outside her circle, let her get out of her sheltered expensive Manhattan condo and let her debate, answer hard, in-your-face questions and let her endure nasty ads from her opponents.

And this is the difference when so many people ask: oh, why is she different from Hillary? Because Hillary fought for causes and was active since her days in college.

There's no sexism here, not even a hint of it!

PS: Sarah Palin was not a victim of sexism, she was a victim of her own stupidity.

26. Sexism is out there in a big way
However, if a man had flubbed an interview as badly as she did with the inarticulate "You know"s it wouldn't have been allowed to pass. I think your are off base here.

From my point of view she wasn't a serious candidate without that famous last name anyway. Caroline Schlossberg wouldn't have gotten anywhere near it.

And really Palin? Palin? Seriously claiming sexism against Palin? As a human she offends me.
