5. That's probably because we never hear about the Palestinians unless |
|
they're conflated with terrorists.
And any attempt to talk about the situation in a realistic way is met with accusations of anti-Semitism. So naturally, the average American knows nothing, and will probably admit to not knowing much, yet they vote in polls.

I had no idea of the plight of the Palestinians until I moved to Europe in 1985. The Europeans see the situation more realistically and recognize who the aggressors are. When you try to talk about it here, you are called an anti-semite. That, of course, ends all constructive discussion.

|
Arafat was so corrupt that he went around with a briefcase of money handing it out to bribe people. Hamas is so right wing that women and gays have few rights. In that environment, Israel is more civilized. The hatred, though, between Israel and the Palestinians feeds extremists on both sides. When Obama resumes engagement in the process, I think we'll see things start to normalize and peacemakers on both sides will be able to exert greater influence. Right now, though, there's a regional paranoia and the Israeli's also have a feeling claustrophobia. These factors are bringing out the worst in both sides.

64. It's a similar phenomenon |
|
It's only antisemitic/Islamophobic if you regard being Jewish/Muslim/Israeli/Arab as a bad thing; but it leads to a lot of confusion, and can contribute to antisemitism/Islamophobia.
E.g. referring to some confusions that I've often encountered:
The overwhelming majority of British Muslims are *not* Arab.
Most Arab Americans are not Muslim but Christian.
Only a small number of countries practice the extremes of 'Sharia law' with stonings, etc. It is not a common feature of Arab or Muslim-majority countries.
Iran is not an 'Arab country'. Israel in fact has a considerably higher percentage of Arab citizens than Iran does.
At least half of the Israeli Jews are not of Europaean origin.
Most Jews do not live in Israel.
The Right of Return does NOT give automatic dual citizenship or right to vote to Jews in other countries. It gives Jews the right to immigrate to Israel if they so choose, but they would normally lose their citizenship in their countries of origin. There are some exceptions to the last sentence - but the number of dual Israeli/ (other country) citizens is FAR lower than is sometimes represented.
Many Jews, in Israel and elsewhere, are secular. Many religious Jews are not Orthodox.
Etc.!

|
I never said that. That's YOUR problem. It is my responsibility to read the posts to which I reply and the posts that reply to me. It is NOT my "problem" that some other poster somewhere said something you don't like.
The U.S. media, whatever its ownership, is overwhelmingly pro-Israel. In fact, our corporate media relentlessly spreads pro-Israel propaganda in place of actual news from the region. In the long run, this does not serve anyone's interests, not even Israel's.
As to *why* our media is pro-Israel, the reasons are numerous and some are complex. But for Israel's defenders to reflexively label anyone who points out the US media's bias as an anti-semite who claims that "Jews own the media" is insulting, ignorant and just as bigoted as the real anti-semites you decry. It is a stereotypical caricature of a real anti-semite that barely even exists anymore. Too often, Israel's defenders use this form of ad hominem in place of offering an actual defense of Israel's policies toward the Palestinians.
As for the posts you cite, they do imply that the pro-Israel slant of our media is due to some sort of coercion. I don't see any claim that "Jews own the media."

'no surprise given the ownership of our media and political opinions by Israel.'
My own view is that there's lots of influence in the other direction, which is not as often recognized as it could be. Israel's role as ally to, and to some extent dependant of, the USA can lead to its being used as a pawn by RW American governments (as indeed the UK has sometimes been). I hope that the current American government will use its influence more in the direction of peace.

I agree. I think the close relationship between Israel and the US is a double-edged sword. I believe both countries and the cause of peace are harmed by the perception that Israeli interests and US interests are one and the same.

Wait, wait?
The poll compares a nation vs. a social grouping?
What are the stats for Palestine vs. Jews, Palestine vs. Zionists, etc?
'Americans overwhelmingly support Germany, not communists, socialists, and other dissidents' didn't turn out so well, either.

62. What was the question? |
|
And was there any option for "I support both Israel and Palestine, but don't support the right-wing of either?"

66. Americans overwhelmingly supported the Iraq war, too |
|
Based largely on media coverage in the states.
People in other nations with an accurate media weren't fooled on bit- and the same is true about Israel.
Sad that Americans don't have the same coverage that others get abroad- and so get played repeatedly for fools.

exactly the opposite of an earlier poll. Clearly *this* one is accurate. :eyes:

72. THERE'S NO LINK TO THE POLL!! There's a link to a REPORT on the poll but not the poll itself. |

Maybe I'm just in a bubble. But even on C-Span it seems like everyone is in agreement (both left & right callers).

80. Americans overwhelmingly are ignorant of the facts in I/P conflict |
|
This is the same group of people that wondered aloud "why do they hate us?" in the aftermath of 9-11, blissfully ignorant of the US policies that brought about the attacks on WTC.

87. What do you mean by support? |
|
I definitely don't support fencing in Gazans and then bombing them with U.S. weapons.
I definitely don't support Palestinians sole means of defense is throwing rocks at soldiers with weapons.
I also don't support revising history so that the Holocaust is seen as something other than a historical fact.
Peace with bombs will never work.

88. While I don't doubt that American public opinion is in Israel's corner, it's a stupid poll |
|
You can support both Israel and Palestine. It's also vague about what "support" means.
But the United States has historical Cold War ties to Israel and thus public sentiment is in their corner. That doesn't necessarily anti Palestinian.
