There is not enough money in this bill for infrastructure, health or education. |
|
That should've been about 1.5 - 2.5 trillion or more.

1. At least we got in some additional money for transit today |
|
The bill is far from perfect, but is a start. Hopefully more spending bills for all these things follow in the next few months.

California, the state I've lived in nearly all my life.
I don't know about others, but I liked the idea of the train from the Bay Area to SoCal, but once they changed the plans to move it down the I5 corridor with stops in everyone of those cities... that's when the price went up and my excitement for it went down.

|
Try a $2.5 trillion one. We'd have no chance at any Republics and likely lose a significant number of Dems.
I've heard there is another stimulus planned for later this year - anyone else know anything about that?

there are roads in my sub division and the freeway I ride to work that needs fixing.
The bill can't include every single thing and get passed in a reasonable time.

There will be hundreds of billions more from other bills and something called the federal budget.

spots.
As the Iraq War draws down, that's a $250 billion savings.
President Obama can direct $200 billion of that money that would have gone to Iraq into infrastructure. That's federal budget stuff.
Also, TARP. The FDIC will use most, BUT NOT ALL, of it to buy up those troubled mortgages. I still expect about $100 billion to remain. For example, buying up a million troubled mortgages at an average of $250K each is $250 billion. Leaves $100 billion.
Why couldn't the POTUS and US Treasury use this remaining $100 billion to "finance" federal structure improvements and new building? Federal monies used for federal infrastructure. You know, like renovating the DC Mall, whose money was revoked from the $825 billion stimulus?
Then there will be the healthcare reform bill later this year. That will be additional hundreds of billions. Couldn't some go to renovate the infrastructure of our VA hospitals? Replace ceiling tiles, re-roof, repaint, etc.

19. A bill is passed at a number because that's the number that is doable. |
|
Edited on Wed Jan-28-09 08:26 PM by TexasObserver
It won't be the only bill passed, or the only monies approved for a stimulus package, but it's A stimulus package. No matter how much is passed, YOUR state isn't going to get more than 10-15% of the total for itself. And your state is the biggest in terms of population and votes.
Thinking everything that needs doing will get done in one bill is simply not rational.
As political demand and economic demand push the needs, they will be met. But Obama can't simply say "$2 trillion" and make it happen, and neither can the Democratic leadership.

22. As much as we would like. You have to get votes in the Senate. No Al Franken |
|
makes it much tougher to push it through the Senate. The bill will look much different coming out of there. There is likely to be more tax cuts and more spending on Infrastructure.

29. Keep in mind that he will get this through WITHOUT rolling back the high income tax cuts. |
|
To pay for health care and the other things, he will roll back the Bush tax cuts to pay for it. I honestly think he will wait until he does in fact get a veto proof majority in the senate and then take the GOP to the woodshed on pretty much everything else including whatever the fuck health care plan he wants to have.
GOP will have nothing!
