HawkerHurricane, I know you're out there somewhere. Are you out of the Canoe Club yet?

I've been hiking and riding all over Mission Trails Regional since they reopened most of the park a few weeks a go.

up around Mt. San Jacinto. I like to do a different hike every weekend, but a nice short hike (5-6 miles)that I have been to a few times is up Mt. Cahuilla.
We've lived here three years and have checked out many, many trails since moving here. I guess there isn't much around you can consider "local". Most trails we do involve an hour drive or more. We generally do 10-15 mile day hikes.
Know of any good ones?

tons of little day hikes and whatnot. I haven't been in years, but I believe Palomar has some nice trails. Santa Rosa and San Jacinto are beautiful. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/102-0762930-7776161

That's the first book I bought after seeing him on TV one night on KBPS. That's a great book! I just picked up John Robinson's book on 100 hikes in the San Bernadino mountains. It's too bad so much of our county burned last fall. There are some beautiful hikes around Julian that we haven't returned to because I believe it's all burned out around there.

7. OTOH there are places you CAN go now that you couldn't before the fires |

I'm badly allergic to poison oak, so hopefully a lot of riparian areas have been opened up for me.
The chaparral, sage scrub, and trees will grow back. If we get any rain next winter the spring is going to be fantastic.

No poison oak and not many other people.
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is (IIRC) the largest state park in Cali. Hundreds of miles of trails, great cross-country opportunities, varied scenery.

I enjoyed our get-together in January.
And I often go hiking with the Sierra Club. Actually I used to; the last hike I went on was in the West Mesa area in the Cuyamacas the day before the fire last October. I understand that area was much affected by the fire.

Two of us, Laz and me. Hawker is out, and having gone through that experiance myself, he's probably caught up in trying to change his habits to survive civilian life.
It's a whole different world; I had more time and opportunity to do what I wanted - even taking in duty days and deployments - when I was active duty than I have now as a civilian.

Same ZIP code as North Park.
We're neighbors! Have to be within 10 minutes of each other by bicycle.

Yes, I left the 'canoe club' in Feb. I have me a nice temp job that I hope will become perm, only problems I have is that the severance pay hasn't started yet.
And if anyone cares, I'm in the south county. Way south. And west. Way west. To get anymore south west in the U.S., you'd have to be in Hawaii. My backyard is in the Pacific. My neighbor is in Mexico.
