1. Yeah. I'm sure it will be easy to get the people of South California. . .
to agree to secede from the Colorado River. It's only about 40% of our water needs. We can easily turn our backs on it, especially if it means winning a "moral" argument.

13. The Colo is ours but we'll build a wall ten miles deep to protect it
Bush wants to radiate it.

2. Moot Question?
Edited on Wed Nov-17-04 06:42 AM by Demos
Wasn't this already resolved once by the Civil War? I think we would need a constitutional amendment allowing states to secede. Not too likely to happen. Maybe we could sneak it through attached to Ahhnolds presidential amendment.

3. yes -- i've been thinking
that the country is just too big to ensure representation.
do i rationally think it will happen -- not so much.
the way things are -- and the state of affairs with corporate america and it's involvement in our government -- the work needed to convince people that dramatic evolution is in the best interests of all -- would be mountainous.
still -- to me -- it's a worthy goal.

5. In the grand scheme of things, we are better off working together.
In the abstract, I think there is a tension between the benefits of power and stability that come from joining together, and the loss of individual power to a larger group.

In the end I'm philosophically inclined toward working together in larger gatherings.

For me the bottom line is that whatever advantage may be gained to me personally would be greatly out-weighed by the overall harm that it would inflict on the states left behind. I have sympathy for a gay man living in fear in South Carolina who needs the "godless Hollywood commmunists" to moderate the extreme voices of the right.

Plus, division is the repug policy. Unity is ours.

By this same line of reasoning, I think our country should be more involved in the UN, and specifically even when this may not be in our short-term best interest. A strong international body helps everyone, and in the end leads to a stable world which is the one thing that the US needs most.

8. That was interesting to read.
Isn't there something that says we have the right to "abolish" our government if it no longer works.

I don't think breaking away will ever happen because CA is only 10-15% more Democrat than Republican't, but it sure is fun to fantasize about it and, if it gets any worse, wouldn't it be great to have the North Eastern states + the west coast secede from the US? What would the mid-west do without us except, perhaps, blow up the world while not on our watch.

10. Not just water
But a huge part of our economy is military contracts. Take away the military, and San Diego dries up pretty fast.

14. Yes!!!!!!!!!!
I wish to God we could secede! Imagine what a cool country we could have! We have most of the entertainment industry, and some of the best natural treasures. Why not desalinization for the water problem? With no right-wingers holding us back, maybe we could actually find solutions to our energy problems. We could be one of the first countries to switch most of our power to alternative.
Sure, there would be a lot of Republicans who wouldn't want to secede, but they don't seem to mind pushing their agenda on us now with just 51%, why should we not push ours on them here with 60%?
I think if we did secede, a lot of liberals from the rest of the country would come here and a lot of Republicans would leave. Good. That would make it even better!!

15. Yes! We've got ALL the money. We'll figure out a way to deal
with the water problem. And for those that don't want to, they can move to a RED state.

I'm a So. Cal person, and I'll be happy to work with the water issue. We can keep the military here. We'd need em' to protect us from *. ;)

19. Yeah, we like to joke about it, but....
Get real, people. This don't make a lick of sense. Yeah, we're pissed the rest of the nation elected this bozo for four more years, but good grief. We're still Americans, and we should be proud of it.
