1. McCollum's not going to run for Senate |
|
So this is pretty much an empty exercise.

If so I urge everyone to get behind Patty.

3. Not yet, but the field's getting crowded |
|
There's at least three big-name DFLers in the running already, so if she's going to jump in, she better do it soon.
Even though Betty's a great Congresswoman, she'd be taking a big gamble by running for the Senate. Right now, she's in a safe seat and is in the Dem leadership, which means she can get on some powerful committees. If she ran for Senate, she'd be giving up that safe seat for an uncertain Senate run against several other high-powered/big $$$ DFLers, not to mention the eventual GOP nominee.
She's pretty much got a job for life representing the 4th as a Democrat-- I doubt she'd give that up for an uncertain Senate run.

5. I think you've got a pretty one-dimensional view of McCollum |
|
If she decides this is the best way for her to do good for the people of Minnesota, we are not in a position to second-guess her, unless we're ready to run for office ourselves.

6. Betty herself has NOT announced a Senate run-- SHE's the one saying it |
|
She has yet to make any noises about joining the Senate race. You can't draft somebody to run for office if that person doesn't want to do it.
She's got a decent job in the House. She's in a safe seat, in the Democratic leadership, and can stay there for as long as she wants. Put yourself in her shoes: why would you want to throw all that away on a risky US Senate run-- especially one where there's no guarantee that you'll win?
You may want her to run, but she's the one who will ultimately make the decision. And if she decides NOT to run, I'm sure she'll support whoever gets the DFL endorsement, too.

Statement on Sen. Mark Dayton's Decision to Not Seek Re-election to the U.S. Senate
"I respect Mark's decision to continue to serve our country and the residents of Minnesota with honor and determination rather than focus on political fundraising and campaigning for re-election. Democrats will continue to need Mark Dayton's progressive voice and votes for the next two years he is in the Senate.
Now, Democrats need to put forward the strongest, most capable and prepared candidate we have. This race will be very challenging, very expensive and one of the most competitive in the U.S. I am commited to doing whatever it takes to keep this seat Democratic."
