I need a counselor or a bar tender or something ! |
|
I just found out I didn't get the job. They said they really liked my ideas but went with the other person because he did his presentation more on membership development whereas mine was program development. They said they would really like to have both of us and that we would be a perfect complement to each other so the bone they threw to me was an administrative assistant position at 20 hours a week with probably nothing for pay. I told them I would have to think about it. My fear is, what they essentially want is two directors for the price of one because the one they hired has shortcomings. So I would be doing the program development part of the job and of course, the director would be the one who would get credit for it as he is the director. I am pretty desperate for a job so I am very tempted as jobs are so scarce anymore. But I have also been in the position of working for someone for five years, working my tail off and the director took credit for my ideas. So, what would you do?

I could go during the week but I just committed to a meeting on Saturday. That's Memorial weekend. I'm not sure the library is open that weekend anyway. How about the 31st? Looks free for me at the moment.

2. Depends on how much I needed the money |
|
At least with 20 hours a week, you still have plenty of time to look for a better job. If it's a change of environment you want, go for it. If you're giving up a good paying job to do it, then in this economy I'd say the money decides.
Weren't you moving back to Illinois? I know you said your husband didn't get the job but I thought you had worked it out.

6. well, here is the story . . . |
|
I don't have a job, I have a small business (I make dolls) but it is not a living wage. My husband's unemployment ran out last month and he took a part time job greeting a Wal-Mart so things are really a struggle right now. He has one more interview in a couple of weeks for a college about 4 hours west of here but our hopes have been dashed so many times, we are afraid to hope anymore. We own a house in Illinois (note that is southern Illinois, no where NEAR CHicago! so no FIB comments please!)where we are originally from and came up here for the "dream job" for my hubby which lasted exactly 8 months. We have been living on unemployment for the last 6 months and thought we would be able to find decent jobs if we stayed here. No such luck, a part time job at Wal-mart doesnt even begin to cover the rent so when our lease is up in June, we are moving back home to Illinois in order to cut our expenses. I was hoping that at least one of us could get a decent job there, back home, before we moved back but that hasnt happened either and we spent nearly 300 dollars in gasoline just going there and back! So, we are pretty discouraged. At 54, people aren't exactly knocking the door down to hire my husband and I took off a few years to be a Mom which also seems to have thrown me out of the job market. I just keep thinking of the 40 thousand dollars that we both invested in Master's degrees and the best we can get in jobs is a wal-mart greeter and a part time secretary. Besides the fact that I am not sure I know how to be a secretary as I have always had a secretary not been one. But our option is too file bankruptcy and starve to death so I suppose there aren't many options at this point. I just can't believe we have come to this point in our lives and things are this bad economically for us. I always thougth those good degrees would give us an advantage but I don't think so anymore. I have noticed that people don't get hired on merit anymore, it is more about who they are related to or who they sleep with. I have seen that way too many times of late.

9. Thanks, wish I could . . . |
|
But we have spent more in gasoline this month than we have brought in so we are not going anywhere until we move. I really hope that when Bush looks back over these last 8 years that he will realize that he managed to screw up the economy worse than any president since Herbert Hoover. Whatever Democrat we get in the White House is going to inherit an incredible mess that is going to take years to fix. By then, it will be too late for many of us. (Aren't I a ray of sunshine today! uggghh . . . I am going back to bed.)

10. I'm so sorry to hear of your trouble |
|
I know what you mean about believing there was some security in having college degrees. It sure does seem like that's not the case anymore. I've had the same experience job hunting as well - learning the hard way that it's more important who you know than whether or not you're perfectly qualified for the job. That's a page out of the Bush School of Business Management that I figured most people would tear out and throw away - not use like it was gospel.
I hope you find good jobs soon and that the future starts looking brighter.
