Is it True that John Ashcroft can be appointed to
Supreme Justice without a vote on the congress?

I was listening to Morning Sedition when a caller brough it up that Ashcroft may be retirring to move into the supreme courts in a self appointed fashion.

That would be the end of Human rights for women, minorities and ethnic people across the board if that happened.

Tell me that couldn't happen

1. I really don't think that is possible.
Especially with a S.C. justice.

3. No
He can't be appointed a Supreme Court Justice without Senate Confirmation. Bush would be very foolish to do so anyway

4. I dunno
I thought he was foolish to appoint him to his cabinet to begin with..

Infact as democrats and progressive thinkers i think we totally underestimated the new republican agenda and right wing cooth to do whatever they feel is necessary to hammer on there far right issues.

9. Well...yes,..he can. Recess appointments...
...have been used to place justices on the USSC before. They must be confirmed by the next congress but once a nominee is on the bench it seems as if it would be pretty hard to remove them. In fact, I don't know if a justice seated with a recess appointment has ever failed to be confirmed later.

chairman of the judiciary committee.

10. Ashcroft is failing in health
Bush is going to want to appoint young, vigorous judges to SCOTUS so they will be his legacy there for 30 years to come. Look how long Rehnquist has been sitting. I would look for a lot of appointees around 40-50 years of age.
