Hood sidesteps query on indicted campaign worker
March 17, 2005

TALLAHASSEE - Secretary of State Glenda Hood has acknowledged that a campaign worker indicted last week was hired to help her in her 2000 race for Orlando mayor but avoided a question about whether he collected absentee ballots for her.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer was suspended Friday after he was indicted along with campaign worker Ezzie Thomas, a judge and a campaign manager on felony charges alleging illegal payments for the collection of absentee ballots.

"Ezzie did voter outreach, just as many people did on different campaigns," Hood, the state's top election official, said Tuesday at an unveiling of sculptures outside her office.

Asked whether Thomas collected absentee ballots for her when she ran for her third term as mayor, she replied, "He worked in the black community on voter outreach, just as people did in the Hispanic community and the community overall."

You can bet if Ezzie collected ballots for Dyers, he did the same thing for Hood, Martinez and others.

The part that they all ignore is that not only do guys like Ezzie collect the ballots, they help the ones who are illiterate fill them out too.
